wrapping petris
    #27112847 - 12/28/20 06:19 PM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Hey everyone, hoping someone has a life hack for this so I don't have to spend 20 bucks on some thin film.  I normally use glad clingwrap (or the offbrand) for wrapping my dishes,  but its becoming such a pain in the ass it makes any agar work unbearable.  I use a sharp knife to cut about a 2 inch section, but the cut leaves small edges that always end up catching itself during the wrapping process.  Its the biggest pain in the ass,  it almost makes me want to stop cultivating entirely.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Parafilm. Micropore tape. Masking tape. Scotch tape.
All four I have used with success.
Though the tapes will leave your dishes sticky, and the parafilm is expensive.
parafilm is god mode once you get the hang of using it.
I wont use anything other than parafilm now.

Thank you for the reply.  I use disposable petris, so I suppose masking and scotch tape it is.

May I inquire, how much parafilm do you purchase at a time, and how long do you find it lasts you?  I normally only produce about 20 petris a month, so i'm curious if i splurge on the para how long it might last.

Thanks again for the answer.

I usually get something like
https://www.amazon.com/Parafilm-Roll-250-Length-Width/dp/B07C2LKDFJ
This above from a local scientific supplies outlet near me. I get it around $21 and it lasts me for about 300 plates or so if they're wrapped properly with it.
It takes practice and I carry like 3-5 rolls of it at any time as I also use it to graft cactus and tree branches.

If you use a very sharp chef's knife and maybe even draw a line with a marker you should be able to get a great roll of clingwrap.

I've never had a problem with it

Thank you guys again for your replies.  I did some digging and found a 12 pack of 3m micropore tape from my BRF days, and I think i'll try this since I have it on hand, don't have to pay for it.

Micropore tape gets expensive. I found I can barely make a roll last 24 100mm dishes.

You only need a 2-3" section of parafilm to wrap a dish so a little goes a long way.

You can go to Amazon and buy 25-foot roll of grafting  tape parafilm that is used for splicing plants together for about 8 bucks. It's essentially the same thing. It works perfectly.

parafilm is the life hack.
@ 20 dishes a week a roll for $20-40 will last years.
Its superior in just about every way to any other film or tape.

I found a really thin bread knife works best to cut the sections of film from a roll, any bits sticking out i shave off with a sharp scalpel at around a 45 degree angle. Don't put too much pressure on the roll as you cut it with the bread knife, let the knife do the work. I've had much better success this way

Ya it's weird, the serrated bread knife I use is razor sharp and cuts clean.

Sooo...the circumference of a 100mm plate is about 12".
But, the tape is stretched, so I measured the cling wrap lengths that came off my plates.
They average 2 feet. I wrap around twice, that's standard right?
Don't know how much difference the stretch is between, cling/para/graft!
I'm liking 1" wide, YMMV...

Anywho...we're talkin basically 2' per 100mm plate.

A picture of grafting stretch on Amazon looks like almost double the length. 90' $9 1" wide.
So...90' of grafting tape  could tape 90 plates for $9...10 cents ea. plate.

HAINANSTRY Grafting Tape 2 Pcs, for 2 roll grafting tape(Green),width:about 1.18inch/3cm,
length:about 328ft/100meters. $9

Cling wrap seems to stretch much less. A roll of Cling is $3  by 100'x12"  ( no shipping )
I also wrap stacks of 5 plates. Only 5 high because they go in a dresser drawer
where there's virtually no temp swings, so no condensation.
Anyway one roll of cling, 100'x12" $3,  for individual plates cut  at 1" wide would be
100'/2 (for 2' strips) = 50 strips, times 12 1" strips per roll=600 strips, so  1/2  cent per plate.

Parafilm, well I just don't get it,. etc....etc....LOL
ebay 2" x 250' @ $30 = (so 6" folded lengthwise is 500 1" strips) $30/500 = .06 cents per plate
6" long because of the stretch and he only has to go around once.

Wow, just watched an awesome vid by SW!

Interesting technique, I see he folds the parafilm lengthwise for double layer and only
has to wrap a little over once around. At 10:10 & 27:43

And for extra credit, for my use, 500 plates divided by a 20 plate stack = 25
25 times every 2 months = 50 months or 4 years!    :laugh2:

Woo hoo, just ordered Parafilm 2" x 250' @ $30 free shipping from ebay!

I use cling wrap because it can be found anywhere, any time. You seem to be doing it wrong, my cuts are clean and never catch, plus I do this with stacks.

Finished product:

Cost per petri is irrelevant at such low cost.

I've never used anything other than cling wrap so I can't speak on comparison, though I'm certain parafilm is the shit as everyone says.

I may be able to help with your cling wrap problems. I use a hacksaw to cut the entire roll. The finer teeth on the blade seem to help edges from getting too mangled. One roll of cling wrap with make like 6 or 8 plate wrap rolls for a few bucks. Maybe one day I'll be rich enough for parafilm, but not today.

I had to use parafilm when I worked in a yeast QC lab. Now I happily use cling wrap.

That used to happen to me. It's easier to cut through Glad than the off-brand I tried, mainly because of the difference in the cardboard roll. I now cut it without frayed edges with a cheap new serrated edge knife. When it starts to get tough to cut I do it for a bit with a hacksaw. I can do it in around two minutes without using a more expensive knife, although a good one might do the job in seconds.

You should probably go look through my gallery if you think I haven't learned anything.
I have spent the better part of five years studying microbiology and then got into mycology because I have a passion for mushrooms.
I'm asking that you perhaps think before being a huge jerk to someone who is literally only trying to help.
I don't understand why it's always like this here, I used to enjoy being on shroomery.
