Building a flow hood: Question about minimum static pressure
    #27113943 - 12/29/20 10:42 AM (3 years, 30 days ago)

I'm looking at this filter here:

https://www.spycor.com/99-99-HEPA-Filter-Metal-Frame-24-x-24-x-5-7-8-p/maggb2424a6ax.htm

It looks like it is rated at .75, or .79W.G.

I'm wondering if that is too low?

Thanks in advance.

You can look at something nicer, these are very coarse, thinner filters have higher pressure drop, thicker ones have lower pressure. It is important that it is 99.99%. The hepa features I use are:
Class H14
Start Pressure 140Pa
Final Pressure 450Pa
End Press 600Pa
78mm x 300mm x 600mm
airflow 300m3 / h

Thanks for responding.

I ended up ordering it so hopefully it works. I ended up talking to a guy at the company who assured me that it will work for a laminar flow hood filter.

What do you mean by saying that they are course?

I found a tek for using an air purifier with the d hepa filter and either clear plastic bag or clear tub. Positive pressure or something. (We are currently house shopping and I just would prefer to wait on a proper laminar flow hood until we move). Would it work better for a short term solution than my current basic sab?

Not at all, click link in my signature.
You'll just be building a turbulence machine. Definitely stick to the SAB until you can build or purchase a proper unit.

I scanned and bookmarked. I guess just stick to the basic sab until we move. I can wait 4 months. The sab has served me fairly well for me so far. It'll work for a lil while longer. I have 3 uvc sterilizing lamps I run before work in there. My contamination dropped significantly just doing that. (I never run with living culture in direct sight of the uvc. Ime it'll basically make the mycelium worthless. Won't turn green but won't pin or fruit either) it's only used as a precaution and extra care. Not something to put all your success into.

Whatever floats your boat, I think you recognize that its unnecessary but I doubt it will hurt anything. Unless you look at it or do something irresponsible.

Absolutely. It's more for peace of mind after the mold in the wall causing the worst contaminants I've ever had. I've been a nurse 20 years with a minor in microbiology. I typically do OK with sterile technique. This was like being sodomized with mildew. I had to rip out the drywall and dump chemicals banned by the Geneva Convention, zissner primer, then for comfort measures covered the walls in liquid rubber. I went tweaker nuts on it and I have never even tried meth. But I ripped and rebuilt. Now I'm just overly cautious.

I've actually heard of people achieving laminar flow with 1-2" wide filters, if you really wanted im sure if you did the math you could make a ghetto build that would function, in your situation it might be worth it tbh but i'm not experienced with flowhoods although my roomate has a thread as well he spent a couple days on that kind of makes the concept easier to understand.

That sounds like a whole situation though haha, goodluck!

That's a nice filter btw OP. I'd give a

I got everything I need to build a hybrid ghetto hood. I will assemble after I finish agar and grain in the sab. Not risking my new genetics until I know it works. I am cutting out the top slightly smaller than the purifier. Putting a smaller tub over the purifier with holes and polyfil along with the uvc sterilizing lamp above it and covered with black sheeting. This is only for work without live mycelium or spores. Mainly for agar pouring of plates. And to run for an hour before work. Not necessary but if you ever have bad contamination you over correct. Or I did at least. Just 2 regular arm holes cut. We'll see. If not oh well. Only spent 6 on the tub. Had everything else
