Quitting Cigarette Support 4

Moving a post from WCA as it contradicts that thread.
Making this for anyone that is thinking about, in the process of, or has previously quit.
What are your reasons for smoking? What do you foresee as potential complications after quitting?
Craving cigs? Feel free the vent here.
And for anyone who has successfully quit, what was your method and have you any tips?

My deal and random cliff notes:
Quote:
I'm gearing up for my final quit. Have been successful for years off in the past.. but am recognizing if I don't ultimately eradicate the habit now, I'll be a lifelonger.
One of the toughest for me, as smoking gives me a reason to go outside (where I love to be) and my subconscious has married the association.
But I despise being a part of the culture known for littering and 2nd hand smoke. The self-health component is important too, I guess
If you haven't already, I'd be sure as to what they do for you, why you want to quit, and what challenges you'll anticipate. Journal up.
One way I quit cigs was to switch to rolling my own. Less inclined to smoke as I must go through the process.
Another time I switched my brand and type- went from Turkish golds to Marlboro menthol (yuk).
Replacing the associations, with healthy ones that still fulfill all but the nicotine craving. (Example from Sugabearcrisp: replace smoking outside with a walk around the block)
The patch was used once to break the ritual of smoking, while taming WDs(these unfettered caused a relapse when I attempted cold turk).
Looked at when I still enjoy smoking: with morning coffee, while driving, after sex etc. Those are the cigs I forbid first.
When I'm ready to cut back I won't allow anything else but smoking- no reading, talking to people, texting- only smoke a cig and stay present(its harder than you'd think). Smoked significantly less once instilling this.
And lastly, having a quit journal to report into daily, support group/quit buddy has helped. Most states have a toll free number you can talk to people in the know.
Imo, having a detailed plan in place before quitting is paramount. But as we all know: there's a 101 ways to quit, it usually takes more than one attempt, and what works for one won't for another.
In the meantime, I'd switch to american spirits and ditch the pest/herb/fungicides. Tastes much better, too.

Sounds good, do it!
Last I looked there's a benzo, opi, alcohol support thread.
Perhaps if we united there would be more participation.
Quitting is quitting: I've managed to use same tactics for different substances. Hbu?

Just smoked my last camel crush (wides were out of stock). Hopefully I can just keep busy at work tonight with side tasks to keep my mind occupied.
Funny you say that LUA I was thinking about posting alcohol and nicotine as Inactive in WCA hoping my balls might get busted if I slip.
Knowing my personality type I don't think tapering is the direction for me. I need to just be done with it and not look back.
Like crisp was saying in WCA the financial calculations might help put things in perspective. Plus the company I work for will give me $1000 a year after quitting.

I feel like nicotine is a unique challenge because you don't really need to hide it and it's sold everywhere. Supposidly it's harder to kick than heroin but that could be bullshit. If so it might be due to how readily available it is.

Congratulations, Green! Wishing the best for you, keep us posted- anything can do to help?
The reason I agree with the heroin/nicotine factoid: For me, heroin was 3 days of hell and progressively got easier after. Would agree that cigs are more accessible and that is temptation front and center. But due to the prolonged duration of time I've smoked, I think the mental aspects engrained were tougher to unravel. The WDs are more drawn out. And while cig shaming is real, smoking cigs is more socially acceptable than shooting H. In theory.
That is wonderful that your company provides incentive, 1G?! The gesture of giving away a half full pack hopefully imparts confidence. And in case you were wondering, you got this

That's great to hear! Keep in mind it's a marathon, not a race.
How are you feeling? What's making it easier?

Sorry, didn't see the post above last.
Currently? I'm anxious and trying to plan/time it right. When I was working 60hrs a week I always told myself, 'I need to take a couple weeks off to quit, will be easier with less stress. Now that I am out of work with too much time on my hands, the days pass so slow and I feel like it would have been easier before, while engrossed and distracted. Actually, I smoke more cigs now than before.
Considering my current mental and physical state, quitting will be complicated. Not an excuse, but facts that must be considered before diving in. I hugely admire you quitting cold turkey. Was it in the back of your mind and the trip made it to the forefront, or was this random greatness? I'm just baffled as to how that works
It's going to be before winter is over, when it's a PIA to suit up and go out to smoke. We made the thread, next will be breaking the associations and only allowing a cig without distraction. That is as far as I am. Just really want it to stick this time.
LifeUnder, where'd all your posts go?

Yeah and I was hoping redeyesmj would want to contribute. Sounded like he was serious about quitting too.
Thanks for the nice words. Feeling OK. Strangely tired and snacking ALOT. I need to start packing healthy options so when I'm grazing to curb the cravings it's not cookies and shit.
I have been wanting to find motivation to quit for a long time just felt right and the motivation was there yesterday (my mush and dmt trip did help put certain things in perspective). Having my family in town now helps a lot because they are hard core Christians and never liked my smoking and drinking.if left with my own devices I'm sure I would have slipped by now.
I totally get needing to plan your route and having a plan to stick with. When your ready to make the jump you've got support!

Stopping in to express support and share my thoughts as an ex smoker on staying off the nicotine. One thing I think is helpfull is cleaning stuff that smells like smoke. For example giving your vehicle a deep clean (or paying someone to do it) helps and sets a precedent that this space is no longer for smoking. Also you might notice as you clean the inside of the glass that there is a layer of smoke grime and consider that is what your insides look like (IPA works well). Likewise if you smoke indoors cleaning and even doing some painting is a good idea to remove the smell. Deep clean your clothes especially jackets. You want to get to the point where when you are around someone who smokes or in a place where people smoke you notice it and go yuck. Personally i was a bar smoker and when they outlawed smoking in bars it helped go a long way to end the habit. When you quit your lungs will begin to produce more pleghm and you will cough a lot. If you can take up cardio as the more you work the lungs the more the crap will come out. It will also make you realize the damage smoking has done and begin to hopefully see improvements from not smoking.

Yeah I should clean the car out as it reaks of smoker still. That's probably the hardest part is the commute to work not smoking and the car smelling ashy. Good idea

Sorry, it didn't alert me the thread had posts. Thanks for swinging through, Sugabear. Very true and great suggestion to deep clean.
Hows it going, Green?
What started as a head cold has descended into my chest, and I have a death cough and can't catch my breath- which is terrifying. As result, have cut from 10-15 cigs a day to 5. Might even slap a patch on if I can locate.

Well I havnt had time to read this whole thread yet ,I'd like to put in my input though as I am a ex nicotine addict currently. Quitting nicotine is definitely not easy , it is literally a hard drug.
In my experiences with quitting nicotine is that there is 2 addictions if you are a smoker because you are not only addicted to the chemical nicotine but the actual physical act of smoking it's like a oral fixation , so when trying to quit it's like your battling 2 different demons in one very very easy to relapse especially when drinking drinks that you would drink and smoke or doing things that you would smoke to
That in my opinion is one of the reasons why cigarette smoking/vaping is so hard to quit
I started when I was 14 , smoked all the way to 21 then quit cold turkey, started vaping at around age 23 and have quit that on and off for the past 5 years essentially
Definitely a lifelong addiction kinda thing it's always gonna be there ya just gotta fill that void n stress with deep breaths and other things
I'm really stoned and this post might be all over but I know you or anyone can do it if you put your mind to it, it's all in the mind and you just have to use other things to occupy your mind /mouth/hands to quit I quit back in November using nicotine gum and have been free from that since sometime in December

Way to go CC its reassuring hearing the success stories. I broke down and bought a pack of American spirits. I went for 5 days without a cigarette but the first day I drank it was over. The relief from the constipation is nice but I am planning on laying off the booze again and not buying another pack. The chemical addiction is the easy thing to ignore its the oral fixation and the tendency to fill my random spare time with smoking that's hard to ignore. I'm going to buy another pack of low grade joints to smoke at work and while driving since that did seem to help with the routine.
Sorry to hear your under the weather Bird maybe this is a blessing is disguise to allow you to force the downtime away from the nicotine.

Keith Richards said: "I have tried (to quit smoking) So far, unsuccessfully! Lou Reed claimed nicotine was harder to quit than heroin. It is. Quitting heroin is like hell, but it’s a short hell. I mean, the actual process. Cigarettes are just always there, and you’ve always done it. I just pick ‘em up and light ‘em up without thinking about it."
Stay strong guys, get back on the wagon if you fell off, it ain't easy.

Just stop..smoked for a a decade..thought about it..then went cold turkey. You got to weigh things out, and realize what is important; also remember this..you are the one in charge..not some stupid pack of smokes..why be a slave to someone else or something else?
