Oyster Buckets Humidity Question - First Grow
    #27112016 - 12/28/20 10:37 AM (3 years, 1 month ago)

I am taking a stab at growing blue oysters for the first time.  I am using rye grain spawn (quart jar) in 5 gallon bucket of maple sawdust/wood shavings (pasteurized).  They will be in my unfinished basement.  Just a couple of buckets worth.  It is winter here so the basement is pretty dry due to furnace running.  I have spent a fair bit of time looking at various threads, but still have some questions.

1.  How do i both ensure fae and maintain humidity.  I have seen suggestions of draping bag over bucket, cutting some slits and misting.  Have people done this.  Will it provide both humidity and enough fresh air.  If so I think my problem is solved.

2.  Next while my grain spawn is colonizing the wood shavings etc do I need to be misting.

3.  If I need to be misting while colonizing should I be using a dark or clear bag (in other words do i have to avoid light during the colonizing process.

I try to avoid asking questions that have been asked and answered.  Hopefully someone will have some specific insight and I have laid this out in a format that will be easily searchable for others with the same specific questions in future.

The bag should work, though I imagine it's awkward once mushrooms start to grow as you need to give them some space. I would put bigger holes in it to ensure better fae, perhaps removing it a couple times a day.

No need to mist during colonization. I keep my buckets in a closet upstairs. The mycelium will be using the moisture from the substrate. I check on mine after 2-3 weeks and pull them for my FC when I see pins. I would say avoid light when colonizing, though it won't destroy anything. Like I said, I just shut mine up in a closet, so it's dark in there.

You could also build a diy chamber for the buckets to be in to boost humidity while fruiting. Just the frame of a box with poly walls with holes to allow fae. It would boost humidity, especially if you mist while fruiting or leave a cup of water or a wet towel in beside the bucket.

Bags over your buckets will work if you want to grow stipe (stem). If you don't have a tent your best bet is to just not use a bag and mist often. You need to get a tent of some sort and some fans and some timers to grow right. You are going to have to put humidity in the tent also.

You can also just grow king oysters in a monotub from what I hear. My spawn is on the way so I will be able to let you know how it works out in about a month. I don't see why it would not work since king oysters you want hi co2 levels to keep the caps small. I am working on a monotub kit with my 3D printer to make it much easier to do. I have sliding doors on the holes to make it easier to adjust your fresh air exchange. It should make it super easy.

Regular oysters will not do well in a monotub they need too much FAE and that is why the bags will not work well over buckets.
