First grow advice
    #27111279 - 12/27/20 07:57 PM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Hey everyone - first grow and first time posting!

I've read up on the basics and followed some simple recommended teks for cultivation (s/o SpitballJedi).

I'm somewhat confident that things are looking okay, but just wanted to get some more experienced eyes on my monotub. I'm looking for any advice on things that I can tweak for next time (or can implement now).

Grow Conditions
  • Sterilized pint jars with rye berries (4)
  • inoculated jars with ~0.1 mL cubensis spore suspension in syringe
  • Bulk substrate: 1 brick coir, 2 qt verm, and 4.5 qt water
  • Colonization under dark conditions with heating mat (~83F)
  • Mixed spawn and subs, left to colonize/consolidate for ~2-3 weeks
  • Switched to fruiting conditions about 4 days ago once seeing pins and a large fruit

Observations/Issues
  • One jar with contams (trichoderma) - user error lol
  • Jars did not reach 100% colonization (~90-95%) - direct heat to bottom of jars
  • Not an even distribution of pins throughout the tub (see photo) - low spawn:subs?

  • Fuzzy feet on fruits (see photo) - waited too late to switch to fruiting conditions

  • Leaning fruits - light issues?

Improvements for Future Grows
  • Larger spawn to subs ratio
  • No heating mat/direct heat during grain colonization
  • Shake grain jars to distribute once or twice
  • Monitor light, humidity, air circulation

More pics:

Thanks!

Sorry I quoted the whole thing because it was the only way I could enlarge the pics, don't know what happened there.

Very detailed description of everything you did that's nice.

Colonization under dark conditions with heating mat (~83F)

Cubensis benefit from a 12/12 light and dark at all stages of growth, never put a grow in the dark.

Never use heating mats for anything in this hobby, it can dry out things at best and promote contamination at worst.

You can introduce fruiting conditions the same day you spawn, that's what almost everybody does these days. More air from the beginning just means more rapid colonization and making it harder on competitors like mold or bacteria (if there's any).

I hope you only scooped out the colonized part of the jars. Uncolonized grains means food for mold.

Those fruits need a lot more light and more fresh air exchange, that's why they look so squiggly. Besides that, I think there's something off with that tub, maybe your spawn was a little bacterial.

Also, it's always better to put your spores to agar first. Spores are never clean and by germinating them on agar you can select healthy growth with which you can inoculate grains in a safer way.

Agar is easy as hell, here's how you can get started on the cheap:

And for your monotubs, you can do this:

I'm still figuring things out so it's definitely possible that I did something weird when embedding the images.

Thanks, I'd gotten some conflicting advice with light. Definitely will be keeping things out at room temp going forward.

Yes, I was careful to only include the fully colonized grain. I tried inverting the jars to see if the bottom would go, but no dice.

What in particular do you see that makes you say that?

Definitely something I planned to do in the future. My partner is a scientist who is very comfortable with sterile technique and we are going to try that. I'm a scientist too and we were treating this first grow as a learning experience and just to get our feet wet in mycological cultivation.

Cool, that looks a lot easier than the larger holes.

Thanks so much for the feedback, this is really helpful!
