Recently I've picked up a UV-C sterilizer bulb for free from a fellow microbiologist/mycologist.
My desire is to mount it within/above my SAB to assist with providing a sterile environment.
If I were to do this what are the pros/cons? I know UV-C is proven effective against both mold and bacteria, though I am not aware of the technical details.
Any thoughts?

I've wanted to use one but I just don't think it provides that much utility. It's effective against bacteria and viruses but I'm not sure it is against fungi. I think their cell sizes are too large, including the spores. Fungi contaminate my cubes more than anything.

Well I had a few ideas when I picked it up.
1. I could mount it outside my SAB and have the ability to run my gloved hands under them, counter measure style.
2. Mounted within the SAB after your regular washing/wiping out of the SAB.
Either way would be just preventative, especially with giving your SAB a UVC scrub right after your regular scrub, I don't see any cons there really.
I have read up on UVC against molds and other fungus which I have found many places stating it does well against them.
though I/they could be wrong

Are those the ones used in uv sterilisers? If they are then you need to be careful. I worked in aquatics for a while and we accidentally sold one to a guy for his marine tank, he didn't realise and cleaned the tank out with it on and got 3rd degree burns on his face and arms from it. He was surprisingly understanding.

i would say even with a glove it might be a bad idea. if you could do it without your skin coming in contact with the uvc i say why not try it.

If it's far UVC(~222nm), it doesn't damage mammalian tissue. It can't penetrate the outer skin layer or the mucus membrane of the eyes. I've been telling people it should be installed as a preventative measure against viruses since April or May, but people only want to follow the media's pulse and not science. Anyway, if you already got it you could probably find a use for it in this hobby.

UV is terribly damaging to skin, eyes, rubber, plastic, and many textiles. It is also not very effective except in very specific applications. IMO there is no place for UV in this hobby.

No expert but welding arc creates UV-C and I can vouch for how badly that burns... its a good, deep burn... much more damage than a run of the mill sunburn...

To add a bit of perspective, for use in laminar flow hoods and bio safety cabinets the UVC lamps take about 15 minutes to kill bacteria/viruses. This time to kill is dependent on the radiation output from the bulb, and the distance from the radiation source. Most manufacturers recommend using the lights for 30 minutes prior to use to account for the decreasing UVC output from the lights as they age. This is only if used in an empty and cleaned hood. Anything that can block the UV light negates it’s effectiveness. Any tools or objects left in the hood will shadow areas. Even small things such as waste or particles of dirt can partially block uv radiation from reaching targeted organisms. This is why in actual practice UVC disinfection has not lived up to it’s initial hype. Add to that the damaging nature of the radiation, and it just isn’t worthwhile in my opinion. Most quality BSC’s have UV blocking glass used in their sashes, and cutoff switches limiting UV use only when the sash is fully closed. It really can be damaging.

:whathesaid:
This was all factored into my decision if I would use it or not for mush cult.
I've decided that in the ways that I'd like to use it, it isn't viable.

who needs a tanning bed when you can just strike up the ol' tig machine? Arc flashes are fun too

I do miss the smell of burning 6010 rods though..

its not a dumb idea its just going overboard and adding risk to a simple design and concept.
if you want something fancy get a flowhood
