Slow colonization oat jars
    #27110530 - 12/27/20 10:52 AM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Hi friends. These oat jars have been on a shelf in a low light room at 65-70 degrees for 8 weeks now.  No signs of contamination but still not fully colonized.  What are your thoughts on next steps?  Thanks.

Not normally...That middle jar looks pretty bacterial, so I doubt it will recover from the shake.

What are you using for GE in the jars?

Fyi, when say we shake, that means busting up the grain, busting up the myc growth, disperse the myc throughout the jar. If just the uncolonized rye just changes position, won't do much. That middle jar, as per photo has some black funk, unless it's just the photo. Overall, jars don't look like they've even been shook.

They are suffocating. Flipping the lids upside down is not going to allow enough, if any ge. And it honestly does not look like they were shook in the picture you posted. The Myc’d areas vs. the uncolonized grain is too sharp of a line imo.

Shake = busting up the myc. I pound jars on my palm to break up the myc, I mean pound.. They're not suffocating. Its way beyond shaking salad dressing. Need some impact, like the palm of your hand, or a old tire. Not a hard surface, like a book or countertop, cause that will bust your jars. The objective is to take the myc clumps, colony, get them back to individual grains, dispersed throught the jar.

Yes,  it might look like the mycelium has disappeared, but it hasn't.

Your colonizing temps a bit on the cool side, however that would only add a few days, and that temp range is totally acceptable.

Do you think that not having GE holes in the lid won’t cause issues? This is a real question and not me getting defensive, I’m curious. I would think that little to no GE would have some play in this

agreed; those jars have not been shaken. At least not properly.
Also did this OP say his jars have no gas exchange?

I agree that they don't look like they were shaken. Without any GE, they will stall out and eventually rot.

I use unmod lids no problem

Just because you can't see contamination doesn't mean something is not present. like everyone said give them a shake if they recover you're good to go.

Few folks been doing unmoded, might get trendy soon. Don't forget to leave lids a little loose, 1/4 turn?  Tghten as soon as you open PC. I'd still use foil on stock lids, don't want water going into jar, getting water under the ring.

Thanks everyone.  You are probably right about the shake. I don't think i gave it enough the first time.  I will bang them around now and hope for the best.  I have had success with the upside down lids before and a lot of others are going this route so i don't think there is an issue with the GE. I loosen about a 1/4 turn and leave the foil on loose.

Thanks Tstone.  Will try shaking more. The black funk on the middle jar is just the photo.  It's a cavity.

Yeah I would suggest micro pore tape or polyfil for your next grain jars you already know how to properly shake due to previous reply’s and unmodified lid tek works but there is slower colonization times I’ve noticed.
