Muscle relaxer withdrawal symptoms?
    #27109779 - 12/26/20 09:15 PM (3 years, 1 month ago)

I herniated a disc in my back and was prescribed cyclobenzaprine to deal with back spasms. Anyways I've been taking 30-40mg of cyclobenzaprine (flexeril) per day for the past 7 months. I was under the impression that it is not a controlled substance and that dependence was not an issue for muscle relaxers. Did a little reading and found out that it isn't supposed to be used for more than 1-3 weeks and that there can be physical withdrawal symptoms which include nausea, vomiting, and insomnia. I don't know if I am in fact dependant on them because I haven't tried to come off yet. is there a correct way to get off this shit? Cold turkey or taper?

I was prescribed some and you're right when you say it's not meant for long term usage.

I only use them sparingly and have no addiction issues.  :cookiemonster:

i'm not sure if it's the correct way, but it sounds like it might be better to taper, if the symptoms are anything to go by. are you able to break the pills into halves or the like fairly easily? (aka are they tablets or capsules?) if you can, that makes it a lot easier for tapering, or if you take multiple pills per dose/ multiple doses a day.

for countering possible issues, you can take melatonin for insomnia, which you should probably be doing for covid resistance anyways - assuming you aren't already. the nausea you can take dramamine for perhaps as needed, which should help against vomiting as well. or wear sea-bands (like 9 bucks at wal-mart or the like) - they're acupressure wristbands you wear to help counter seasickness and nausea. or drink ginger tea or just eat ginger in general, if you enjoy the taste of ginger. (i don't, but many people do. :P ) chamomile tea is also excellent for helping to relax and help to fall asleep at night, and unlike GINGER, it has a pleasant, fruity/floral taste and aroma. another option for helping to counter any possible withdrawal symptoms.

generally when you've been on something for a long time like that, big shocks to the nervous system tend to lead to unpleasantness, especially as you get older and your body is less likely to adjust to new changes quickly. everyone's different though - some people adapt quickly to shocks even at older ages, if they're the kind of people who are constantly trying new things out and their bodies are used to the unexpected.

A quick read up on it said that 44.5% of people prescribed that drug use it for more than a year. The reason it's recommended for short term use is there's no clinical data on long term use. Apparently withdrawals from stopping suddenly can be intense but are short term, setting in within 24-48 hours, peaking within a few days and then subsiding within a week or two. Doesn't sound too bad tbh. Just taper off for a few weeks and you'll be fine man. Probably just have a grumpy week when you are done.

I saw nothing in the articles and references I read that was highly alarming.
