dunked casing last night....
    #2710852 - 05/21/04 11:46 AM (20 years, 4 months ago)

i knew this was gonna happen yall.. i kept tellin ppl and look wut happens lol... DUNKING A CASING IS A BAD IDEA... first off, i was right, it comes RIGHT OUT of its container, and floats.. so i put a 1/4" wire mesh with like 4 ounce weight on it.. just to hold it 100% underwater.. i come check on it about 2 hours later, its split apart down the middle, and broken, then i come back again anhour later and its split into like 8 pieces... now... WTF AM I SPOSE TO DO??? how the fuck do u dunk a whole damn casing??? im tellin ya.. its hopeless and probably useless lol..

I always just left it in the container, added the water, small weight on top, then covered it foil with holes poked in it, flipped it over, let drain, and recase.

DUNKING A CASING IS A BAD IDEA

TripleB, no it's not. It's the only way I bother with millet casings as they end up a hydrophobic concrete block after 1st flush, not to mention the 1st flush robs a lot of water, so to rehydrate it, makes a dunk a good option.

Solid cases with drainage holes, solid enough that a brick won't crush it sitting on top.

When you make up a drainage hole tray with the intention of dunking, it's a good idea to put in 1/2" of inert sub-base case materials, straight coir or straight vermiculite or a mix of the two. Or you can use growool (rockwool), works the same, seen right pic. This prevents the grain substrate being exposed to potential air/contaminants via the drainage holes. Case/incubate/patch & fruit it.

Only after 1st flush do you dunk. Pick off all the fruits.

The reason why you only dunk after a 1st flush is so the case sets like a "mycelium concrete" (and they do). Then it won't fall apart in the drink in its tray regardless of inert media choice. Pic, a growool/coir millet tray. Note, the casing was removed from the tray for the pic. Do not remove casings from their trays when you dunk, as the tray will guarantee holding the casing together. Again, that's why there's drainage holes so it doesn't remain in a soup when lifted out of the tub.

Fill a tub with water, slowly lower the tray in and place a brick on top over night. At no stage is the brick or any weight/pressure is to be placed on the actual casing. Compressing a casing will screw it. The brick must rest on the tray walls only. Drain for an hour, patch and back to the fruit terrarium.

The above trays, 2nd flush after the dunking.

Again dunk, 3rd flush.

It's a good idea btw to have catch trays on your cases, so water that continues to drain out can be removed without mucking the terrarium up...spores make enough mess.

Some more trays, all dunks after 1st flush.

Millet/growool trays.

1st flush.

2nd flush.

3rd flush (heat got it)

1st flush.

2nd flush

3rd flush (heat got it).

Millet/vermiculite trays.
All different trays, all different flushes...all dunked after 1st flush and between every flush after.

1st flush (for a general comparrison).

2nd flush

3rd flush.

4th flush.

7th flush.

You could dunk your casing upside down. Then there is no need for wire mesh or any possiblity of it comming out. Just put upside down and sink with a brick. JUst have to have drainage holes in your container as not to trap air.

thats a pretty solid idea..... As long as it is right in there it shouldnt fall out at all. I may dunk a few of my casings to have a control-experimental type of deal to post. I was also going to patch half and not patch the other half, and see how that goes.

I want to see how to increase yield vs time. hehehe. Maybe patching will delay growth, you could just replace the casing in your terrarium, or maybe it will increase yield vs time. Dunking takes time and delays fruiting by a day or so, but it may be worth it. I plan on completing a large number of experiments over time using many controls and hopefully I will find out some good information and increase my yields along the way.

gj guys

patching is most definitely worth it and so is dunking...I admire your experimental look at it tho...exactly how I started out doing things and still do...I always like trying new shit and prefecting old stuff
