That's what made me think of the tannerite. It's actually kind if hard to detonate. Some proprietary inhibitor or whatever

TNT can and will explode during nitration if you let the temperature get too high. My protocol was if it hit 95C, I tossed in an ice cube and ducked. Problem is the potential for localized hotspots within the reaction vessel. Even then, there's a fine line between vigorous burning and explosion. I definitely lost a few flasks to that.

Sodium azide is extremely toxic, on par with cyanide. That will also raise eyebrows.

The one I saw was a thick brown/black smoke pillar. That, combined with the apparent incendiary effect, plus how relatively easy it is to obtain, made me think badly mixed ANFO. Though, since then, I've started considering the possibility that fuel oil was replaced with lighter hydrocarbons, like diesel, which would have made it less stable and given it more of a napalm effect. Credit to ballsalsa (I think? Been some rapid fire responses) on that one.

Wikipedia says it's used in agriculture for pest control of soil born pathogens

Yeah, but in much smaller amounts than fertilizer. Plus, the relative stability makes it harder to detonate, limiting it's use as an explosive unless you start trading the sodium out for heavier metal ions. Which gets complicated.

That's also something to consider: we could talk about all sorts of exotic explosives that are possible and quite dangerous. Nobody has mentioned azidoazide azide yet, which according to the, frankly, legendary, Klapotke group, will spontaneously explode, while left alone, in a dilute water solution, in a dark room.

But it's not easy to acquire in large amounts. There is a reason that ANFO is one of, if not the, most commonly used explosive for clandestine operations, and that's because it's easy to make, easier to get the materials, and does the job.

What about old fashioned black powder? Lots black market fireworks this year.  Can't be that hard to take apart

Sodium azide is hard to detonate unless you prime it with a little drop of a lead or silver solution. Then you can detonate it with a hammer

Nah that doesn’t explode unless it’s contained in a strong container. Not really the kind of material you want to use to destroy a building. It’s good for harming people.

Or with the force of the second drop of lead solution hitting the lead azide you just made.

Lead azide being number three on my "do not fuck with from personal experience" list, behind lead picrate and TATP.

Anyway. I've been awake for over 24 hours, and I've sobered up, so I'm out.

I have a pound of sodium azide that scares the hell out of me. I want to get rid of it but even the process of destroying it is nasty because it’s so toxic.

Supposedly the AN prills used for blasting purposes are optimized by being perforated. If someone had access to those would they need less total material?

There's also the possibility it was an accident.

Probably better for getting a coating of the fuel oil. I would imagine anything more than coating the surface with the oil would hinder the explosion.

Here’s what standard reagent grade AN looks like. Little balls that look like the stuffing inside a bean bag

The difficult part of using ammonium nitrate is getting something that will detonate it.
