Is Santa a Democrat or Republican?
    #27106926 - 12/25/20 05:52 AM (3 years, 1 month ago)

1) free top-down handouts in the spirit of Socialism, therefore a Commie.

2) outsourced production to the North Pole, partial reliance on Coal.

You be the judge :christmas:

Republican. EDIT: neoliberal

Santa runs a slave labor operation creating somewhat useless trinkets that exist to commodify interpersonal relationships and normalize transactional social interactions from a young age. Essentially, it's the free drug sample designed to get you hooked on capitalism.

What distinguishes modern Santa from more ancient gift giving rituals, such as theoxeny, or even St. Nicholas himself, is a question of utility and credit. Theoxeny involves giving gifts to travelers to replenish their supplies, in exchange for stories and news. It is a form of social gift giving, but the gifts are designed to aid the traveler, while simultaneously creating a physical embodiment of a social alliance. Santa is not interested in creating any sort of social relations. Further, the gifts are exchanged on a specific schedule, as opposed to the more organic social interactions between host and traveler.

As the gifts given by Santa are not intended to create a social relationship, they could fall into the category of charity, ala St. Nick. Of course, unlike St. Nick, who was explicitly not interested in receiving credit for his charity, Santa makes it quite clear who's giving out what. Further, Santa seems to not discriminate and offers charity to everyone, regardless of need. Such a public and conspicuous display of charity, only on a certain designated day, indicates a purpose besides the charity itself--not unlike Andrew Carnegie, who, much like many extremely wealthy people, spent a significant sum of money on conspicuous and extremely public philanthropic projects designed to whitewash the ruthless business empire that managed to harm almost everything it touched, while completely ignoring the plight of the people most affected by his business practices. On the other hand, I'm sure the people that lost their livelihoods due to Carnegie's aggressive vertical integration were mighty happy to look at the outside of concert hall bearing Carnegie's name, that they could not afford to attend.

Finally, and I actually just learned these terms a few days ago, in the context of Santa explicitly, the mythology surrounding Santa is an expression of biopolitics and biopower, make clear by the story of Rudolf the red nosed reindeer. Rudolf was explicitly shamed and excluded as a genetic freak, until one day Santa came up with a way to exploit his deformity for his own gain. Much like Santa's elves, and much like the average Amazon warehouse worker, Rudolf is a clear example of the ruthlessly capitalist mindset that living beings are worth only the value that they can provide, and if that value is not immediately obvious, then those beings are to be discarded until they can demonstrate a value to their boss.

Santa is Canadian.  He's neither a Democrat or a Republican.  It's a matter of geography and knowing where the north pole is located.

Santa is a democrat because people expect him to grant their wishes but then on Christmas Day only the rich kids get PS5’s
