My experience with microdosing experience and insight needed

I started microdosing golden teacher that I grew, dehydrated and ground up and put into pill form at the end of October of this year, beginning with a one day on and three day off schedule starting with three dosages soon after waking up at .07 grams and then four dosages at .13 grams and then the rest at .17 grams. I only took this last dosage amount a few times and stopped as I was experiencing more disassociation and halfway through sleep I would wake up with what I would call existential dread and very anxious. While this was starting I had a life event happen with starting a new job. This is my first experience with taking mushrooms, I sought out starting with microdosing for help with my depression.

Questions I have did I rush increasing my dosage amount? Was .17 grams too high of a microdosing that it was leaning into the anxious beginnings of tripping causing my middle of sleep awakening? Any insight into these questions and my experience is appreciated.

It's hard to be sure about things here, especially since it sounds like you had other things going on with your life.

BUT, there's definitely a 'less is more' idea to microdosing. If you had no problems at lower doses, I'd be tempted to take a break and then go back to the lower doses when you feel ready. Microdosing should be unobtrusive and for many, including me, doses decrease with experience.

I am micro-dosing too, it is very effective against my migraines. I have started a few months ago and have steadily decreased dosages since then. I’m filling my capsules with 0.1 g dried and ground Golden Teachers. These days, most of the time I need more than one (maybe 2-5), which gives me a light “buzz” (hard to describe, but I definitely feel it. Far from a trip though).
However (and that’s why I’m answering), I do remember having a few bad nights, back when I was accidentally taking enough to be tripping. I remember falling asleep easily enough, but waking up sweaty AF soon after, several times through the night. I don’t remember any dreams or nightmares though, but I rarely do, since I also smoke. So in my case, not sleeping well is definitely what happens when I take too much.

Taking in account your two's experiences, If I do decide to microdose again I'll not increase it as quickly and not go up to the .17 that I last took. I don't remember having the middle of the night awakenings on lower dosages.

There's no right or wrong dose. If the 0.17 mark starts to create a negative response, but something closer to 0.1 is working, then stick to that.

A few other thoughts:

In my experience microdosing has been subtle.

Microdosing in no way solves big issues. If you have serious stuff going on in your life, microdosing is not going to make these things easy to handle. It can be a tool to help manage life's curve balls, but at the end of the day suffering is suffering and challenging times are challenging. I hope that's not too glib.

My anecdote: When I first started microdosing I was going through a 'funk' or 'blue phase' microdosing didn't pick me up on it's own, but offered a light that slightly brightened things. Pointing me in the right direction if that makes sense. Once I settled into a more positive headspace things ticked a long nicely for a while. However, a few personal curve balls came a long. And while my microdoses helped me, the situations were still tough. In some ways this was a relief, as I didn't want microdosing to be a numbing agent that caused me to float through life without experiencing the highs and the lows.

Psychedlics amplify things, this is something of a double edged sword. As it could make certain aspects of out internal world more pronounced. Sadness, happiness, etc. This does give you the chance to become more aware of what is going on in the mind, allowing you then to work on whatever it may be.

Mushrooms are not a silver bullet. They are not for everyone. What is important is that you objectively experiment with dosing, schedule, etc. Don't be afraid to come to the conclusion that mushrooms and microdosing aren't for you. There is no need to try and consume a specific dose. If you start again, then start back down on a very low dose. Build slowly and apply a gentle awareness to how it impacts you. Once/if you cross a threshold that has a negative impact that drop the dose back down.

I started on 0.1 and worked up to 0.25. I found 0.25 is be too 'present' so I reduced back down to around 0.15-0.17 which sits just below my threshold. I tend to err on the side of 0.15 on busy, working days, and lean towards 0.17 when I am staying at home to study or having an easy day.

A small rant:

I find a lot of what is written about microdosing to be misleading. Too often the latest trendy self help technique gets presented as a cure all with magical and dramatic impacts. I was a bit sucked into this, but after a while I realised that microdosing, at least for me, is a very subtle tool. A tool that sits below exercise, diet, and meditation.

Final thought:

I only make this point as I have fallen into this trap before, in no way am I saying you will or you are the type of person to do this. Never be afraid to say "this doesn't work for me" and move on. I've persisted with certain things in my life despite them having stopped working or worse, turned into a negative influence.
