HEPA Filter Build - Fan Question
    #27106374 - 12/24/20 07:07 PM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Hi everyone,

I'm building my first LFH and had some concerns regarding the compatibility of my fan and HEPA filter. I believe my fan may be too weak to provide laminar flow. Any input on the parts I've gathered would be appreciated.

HEPA Filter: 24" x 24" x 11.5" Astrocel HCX filter.
-1.4" WG
-99.984% efficiency
-2000 CFM Test Flow (what is the significance of this number?)

Blower: Peerless KE-11 Fan with 3/4 HP motor
(https://z1.grr.object.ussignal.com/AMCA_PROD/CRP/2083/1664.0/Catalog/17940_Approved%20Catalogs_PB-19865%20August%202013_2013_09_09.pdf)
-97 CFM @ 1.5" WG
-617 CFM @ 1.25" WG

I initially thought my filter had a 1" WG resistance. I planned to add a pre-filter bringing the resistance to ~1.2" WG. This may have been a mistake.

Since the actual resistance of my filter alone is 1.4", I wonder if this fan will work? Do I need the fan to produce 400CFM at 1.4" or do the fans have a chance of being compatible. On MS Excel, I plotted a fan curve based on the table on page 4 of the attached fan PDF specs. At 1.4" WG the CFM appear to be around 300CFM using linear interpolation - I could be out to lunch with this assumption.

Thanks for any input and happy holidays!

It is the test speed that the asserted the filter is filtering properly at that volume of air passing through

Some filters faster air causes their efficiency to drop dramatically at cetains volumes and speeds of air.

Some filter are designed to operate at 21 cfm and filter 99.99999999998

interpolation at drop off us very rarely linear it is usually during a drastic curve drop. usually over 1 down 2-5 squares.

350pa is 1.4 wg

Yes, you need 400 ft3/min at 1.4 AT least you will need to add .2 or more if you have a pre filter.

A suitable fan with no prefilter is (close but gonna push out probably 90-100 cfm )http://catalog.pelonistechnologies.com/item/ac-centrifugal-fans/ac-centrifugal-fans-w-forward-curved-blades/pn-23837
actually https://www.electricmotorwarehouse.com/content/Dayton/blower_specs/ITDU2.pdf

Nevermind
Buy this fan. It is amazing cheap and PERFECT fit with a .2wg prefilter. flow will probably be 95-120 cfm dependent on which prefilter and just how clogged it gets.

And you will have with no pre filter a better agar cooling and drying air.

Thanks Tiger! I'll look into that Dayton, or something locally available that's similar. Cheers!

I hope you do find it. It is a beeotch to search through fans. Some of them dont specify if they work in a particular range some are rated as min and max because heat issues and ability to stay running. Yet some obviously will run and stay cool in other ranges but it stops the chart.

Wishing there was a updated database of fans and blower we could search for be operating ranges of FH project and you can actually search the WC ratings which i overlook many fans because of incomplete technical data sheet data.

For a 24 24 $225 is not bad i saw some flying sauce style in line ducted fans that have continus operation and enough power to pus pressure at that resistance but again the range stooped at 1 inch WC if you could contact tha manufacturer, you may be able so save $80 and buy a 130 in line ducted that would work same as a dayton but more discrete.

What's the matter do you own that other fan already? If so just put tat baby on 40cfm is just as clean as 100 cfm. I think its less likely actually to swirl yeasts off your bare handed skin a lower pressure.

An up to date database would be amazing. I do own the fan already, as well as the filter - that's why I way hoping they'd be compatible. I was hoping to put them together since I have all the materials ready to go - its definitely been a pain in the A to source everything!

When you say 40 is just as clean as 100, do you mean I could technically still use this fan with this filter, it would just maybe not be laminar flow?

Do it man. you dont NEED to have 100 cfm the 50-80 you will get is gonna be amazing. Don't sweat it. Or sell the fan and buy a different one. Up to you. Much luck though let us know what you do.
