Straw pasteurized RR method with hydrated lime question
    #27105530 - 12/24/20 09:51 AM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Hey I'm planing on doing a Oyster mushroom grow with my niece(9yrs) and nephew(4yrs)

I have jars colonized with clone myc I foraged for, with my niece and now we are gonna grow some in the back yard.

I was watching RR  :rr:  vid on bulk heat pasteurization of straw. It calls for 1 cup of hydrated lime for every 10 gal of water.
I'll be handling the hydrated lime.

My question is after pasteurization is it safe for children to handle the pasteurized straw with it's elevated PH?

I don't want to burn their hands. In the RR vid he is not wearing gloves during any part so I assume it's safe, but though I check you all.

Thanks for your help on this!

Should be fine but you don't really need to add any chemicals if you're properly pasteurizing with heat, so you could skip it to be safe.  Oysters are very aggressive.

Do watch out for the heat if children are handling though, of course.  Gets really hot.

Thanks Forrester, I’m pasteurizing in a plastic tub with a mix of boiling and cold water to hit between 140-160F. Do you think I can skip the hydrated lime? I want it to work but I want the kids to be able to get their hands dirty and help lay the straw out.

I was just planning to follow the RR tek. For laundry basket oysters.
Normally I pasteurize smaller quantities in jars with an instant pot but that’s for my smaller grows.
This RR tek seemed super low-fi and easy for such bulk.

It’s cool to see this oyster myc grow I had one clone in agar that was contaminated and the wild oyster myc demolished the contam...I was impressed lol.

That amount of lime in that much water isn't going to be any harsher than irish springs soap

The project worked, the kids loved seeing the process all the way through.
We pasteurized the straw and inoculated with grain spawn on December 26, 2020
First flush 2-12-21 we were beginning to think it wasn’t going to fruit.

Hello, very nice . I always use the lime method. Why don't you use a plastic bag? The plastic bag prevents the straw from drying out.

Thanks Emre yeah I might do the plastic bag next time. Something about using the laundry basket really cracked me up so I wanted to try it. My niece and nephew though it was funny too

I had an oyster bag a few years ago (I bought it at a myco fair) but it kept fruiting behind the plastic not out the holes, I wonder if there is a way to avoid that.

You have to water the holes you made. If the hole dries out, the mushroom cannot get out.

That actually turned out really good for a straw basket, plastic bag or no!

Growing with your kids is awesome, I now have to start again and redo it all cause my daughter was too young then and doesn't remember.  Good reason to grow more mushrooms though
