Small Oysters
    #27103659 - 12/23/20 07:40 AM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Hi there, first time doing oysters, i followed this tek but with 1 gallon bottles.
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/12702122

1 picture a day since pinning.

Im happy to get mushrooms, i got a good pinset but i think they grow so small, what do you think are the factors for that.

I think maybe the holes where a bit small but i dont know. Also it was so fast, i made the bottles on 07/12 and they where pinning the 18/12.

Please some advices i want to get better results now

looks good , I grow quite a few oyster mushrooms I tend to get larger mushrooms but less of them. I grow pearl oyster, blue oyster pink oyster ect it could be down to strain ; What variety of oyster mushroom are you growing? doesn't matter about the hole size I have had oyster mushrooms break through the top of my blocks when closing them up with elastic bands now I wire them shut looks like your co2 levels were correct but you might get bigger flushes if you give them more humidity also isolating good genetics on agar can improve size and cluster makeup

Hey there!

I've been growing oysters at home in a similar fashion with similar first flush results.

what's your fruiting conditions like? high humidity with adequate isn't the easiest to achieve.

smaller fruits could be caused by many things such as the size of the fruiting block, genetics used, temp and humidity factors....

my second and third flushes have been giving me some much larger fruits so you'll have those to look forward to.

big or small they are all tasty AF  :hereyougo:

Thanks! these are grey oysters. My room temp is really good between 61~70 f in nights and days. I live by the sea so the RH is high naturally (today that is cloudy is 83% according google, on a sunny day is like 50~60%*)

I have always an humidifier in low and sometimes a day a put it in max, i also mist lightly occasionally.

Also i bought the spawn to a lab because i wanted a good strain to clone in agar now, i have more experience with cubes.

The second pic show the indoor temp. where i have my grains and some cubes.

They breath the same air i do, i have kept the windows open all day and slightly open at night. I also live in a room with a 4 meter ceiling, i keep my door closed almost every time maybe i can open it more, but i think they have pretty good air.

I think maybe a reason could be i used too much spawn for that straw and it lacks water in the substrate. It could also be more chopped and packed.

I have some blue oyster LC that I've been using for a while now. Some logs give some tiny fruits like you show here and others go really big. I find that using master's mix on a 10lb log gives me the best results weight wise but not always size.

Genetics.

Blues usually are more prone to growing lots of really small mushrooms.  In later flushes they'll grow fewer and they can be bigger.

If you want bigger oysters try a different strain, pearl or phoenix or something like that.

I get tiny and huge mushrooms off of the same strain (columbinus), and off of the same substrate (masters mix). In my case, it depends a lot on how many pins are formed. If I get a lot of pins, I will get a lot of small mushrooms. If i get a small pinset, the fruits will be bigger. The greater the area of the block exposed to fresh air, the greater the number of pins, but thats not a very linear nor fixed relation. Sometimes I cut bigger slits but dont get as many pins, and sometimes I cut smaller slits and get a lot of pins under the plastic.
