Tube amps are generally what most people what consider sounding the best.  Play some and you will see for yourself.  The coveted sound of saturated tubes cannot be faked by solid state and modeling.  Solid State do have a time and place for certain applications, but if you are looking to get a nice amp that will pretty much sound good no matter what, nothing beats tube.

Playing at louder volumes, or in band type settings with others is when the magic of tubes REALLY comes alive and becomes apparent, you will get so much responsiveness, harmonic resonance and feedback and tone out of it, that most solid states can't really do.

Tubes will always sound better but they're finicky and require maintenance. If one blows and you're not prepared, it's basically the worst, especially in a live situation.

Once they warm up and your EQ is solid, they are basically heaven.

My experience is almost exclusively with Peaevey 5150, Valve Kings, etc.

Tube amp all the way, for the same reason why I prefer tube compressors like the Manley Variable Mu and EL8 Distressor over solid state or digital compressors, which is due to the way they add warmth and help guitars and vocals to stand out a little more and any distortion is very harmonic.

Nice! Was on the fence, but once again shroomery swoops in with some knowledge.
