Got some bacteria on PR and APE plates I'd hoped to take to grain, so another transfer on the APE and PR.

P. adiposa myc is really aggressive! Took T2s from a very clean looking plate.

Cooked up some oats last night. Should be putting these master jars to grain in a few days. They've been fully colonized for over a month and have been sitting in a dresser drawer under some clothes for about 3 weeks. There's a lot of condensation in build up in the jars but they don't look bacterial. I'm sure it's because they've been laying on their side and have been exposed to massive temp swings. The Yeti jar furthest to the right looks suspect for sure. There's a lot more condensation in the jar than what's in the others and the myc looks really thick but that myc looked like that when it was on plates too.

March 17th.

Couple tubs of PE tightening up to pin. Also had another one that got cased a couple days ago.

Spawned a tub of WG yesterday.

Also have some jars APEU spawn finishing up.

I spawned some shoeboxes of APEU spawn that wasn't looking great and they seem to be doing ok so far.
PESA took a bit of cleaning up but it's finally in LC, will hit grains in 3-4 days.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
18.03.21
Just a small sneaky update. Lost two of the clone plates to bac, but amazingly one seems to have worked out. So I let it grow a wee bit and have taken some T1s today.
I somehow managed to drop a hair on the original clone plate though...
:huxleyfacepalm:
So I'm guessing that'll be a goner soon.
I'm quietly excited about these clones. Never had one work out for me before!
I have fallen into a series of contaminated grain bags lately. I have had a few that I was able to spawn the other day. Praying those don't end up crapping out also. The culprit was my cheap chinese impulse sealer. Good news is I ordered a 16" uline impulse sealer the other day. The damn thing was on my doorstep the very next day. So I should be back in business here soon.
Updated Progression Photos for MS Gandalf Tubs
First Gandalf pins started popping up on day 14. The cultures that went into the tubs did not fully colonize the top layer during the first 11 days of colonization like the RW and WG tubs beside them did under identical conditions. This warrants further experimentation with different cultures and thinner top layers. I've also had some trouble keeping the surface conditions ideal with these 66qt ez dialed tubs. For future 66 qt tubs I'm going to experiment with taping the side holes and the bottom row of top holes until pinset and then removing all the tape and letting them breath for first flush. I also forgot that the TAT family thrives with drier subs otherwise the first flushes tend to be a bunch of midgets.  My future tubs with Gandalf, TAT, Ghost, and Yeti will all use less water. Hopefully with these first two tubs of Gandalf, the second flush will be bigger and meatier as it looks like I'll be getting midgets ... though to be honest it's still beats getting an entire flush of blobs.
is this anecdotal or something that's been observed by a lot of people? I chalked up my yeti choders to substrate size, but lately I have been putting a little extra water in my coir because my PE and RW seem to like it. It seems your gandalf isn't really reacting to sub size though so you may be on to something.
It looks like they preferred a more compacted sub. Looks like you tapped down around the edges to reduce side pins? I’m seeing growth almost all the way around. Maybe a slight compact surface next go?
Well at least that's a nice pinset Mell. I'm right behind you with gandalf, also experiencing the same "issue". They just don't seem to like the thick top layer I lightly sprinkled.
I too had a hunch they may like a more compacted sub and a thinner, more compacted top layer.
In this hobby the phrase "your mileage may vary" is as real as it gets.. personally I'm always bummed when I see a top layer not colonized that I applied at spawn. Pinsets are usually not as good without a good coverage of the surface but I've heard peeps say otherwise.
These are mine, they seem to have stopped colonizing the top layers.
I hope they surprise me in the end. Besides this top layer issue, so far these cultures are the most fagtarded myc I have on plates atm, very wispy too, but we know that doesn't mean shit.
Yeah it seems there are a bunch of people seeing this happen with wetter subs. Tankie, I skipped the liners this round for these tubs and was experimenting with tub compaction. You are correct in identifying that there is a 3/4" highly compacted edge/trough around the edge of these tubs. Being 1/8" deeper and really compacted these genetics colonized and started pinning three days earlier from the compacted ring than the fluffier center area. Jose, the myc on these has been all over the map for me, mostly Melmak like myc with a spattering of pseudo-rhizo and really rhizo mixed in. I think this makes sense given the pedigree.
Here's some input from D3 and Dalcassian too.
Quote:
D3monic said:
The TAT were full canopies but two flushes and done in both my tubs I ran. My first tub was all tiny fruit, I suspect they like to be ran a lil dryer than I typically run. I’m always slightly over field capacity
The Dalcassian said:
It seems to be a thing with the tat genetics that the first flush is quite small. My runs all had full but tiny first flushes too and when I was on fb quite a few people mentioned similar growth.
You're probably right, I'll try a slight dryer sub when I run the TAT and see what happen.
I used the same ratios as I had been with my RW and WG -- 4 qts spawn 650g coir and 3 qts fine verm with 4500 mL of water. I'm going to try out Grim's ratios next with 5 qts spawn 750g coir 1 qt verm and 3650 mL of water.
well shit lol wish I'd known that before. I have 6 shoeboxes of yeti coming in, the fastest one is looking like a repeat of the other shoebox with a bunch of smallies. I actually gave them the slightly wetter coir at the bottom of the cooler with the reasoning that with a good pinset like the germ plate box the extra water would help the fruit fill in a bit more. Now I know for the clone hunt I guess :shrug: the experiments continue
Quick update: My GT monos have been colonizing nicely for a few days, I'm hoping to start seeing knots by the beginning of next week. I applied my second casing layer to all my PE shoeboxes and minis last night so I'm guessing in a few days they'll start poking through. Hopefully this means that by April I'll start seeing pins developing on possibly both varieties!
APE was bein weird so that one is way behind. I have it cleaned up on agar I just need some time to drop it into some broth for an LC.
The jars I inoculated nearly two weeks ago are all looking decent. I prepped the wheat a little on the dry side but the myc is doing fine so far.
Some nice looking grows going.
MuthaFudpucker Grows some stuff (update)
2021-03-19
Did the g2g on the Tamps on 3/11. I didn't dump the excess oats, so they were really full and a pain to shake on 3/18. I left the rest of the Tamp jars to colonize, consolidate and maybe will let them go to stones. Plenty of time to decide. Nothing picture worthy on those yet.
Got a couple of update pix of the PE.
The three Ikea cookie jars are in various stages of colonization. The spawn jars for these showed some contam signs, so I am just going to watch them and see if they look like they want a casing.
All three pictures are the same tub at different stages. The mono looked ready for a casing. I decided to try half 1:1 CV and half Jiffy seed starter. The only Jiffy I can find has coir, so I wanted to see it is even worth using over cv. I pasteurized both at a bit above field capacity in quart jars in the Instant Pot. The CV is the lighter half in the last picture.
OP updated.
