I've only found em twice so I can't give you a positive ID, but it appears to be Gymnopilus near luteofolius! I was told that the ones in our area are generally Gymnopilus thiersii rather than luteofolius.

Thanks for the input! Yeah I was puzzled not seeing either on the mushrooms by state document! Looked up Thiersii and it definitely could be that! Coloration just looks more like the pictures I’ve seen of Luteofolius. Hopefully we can get some more input!

I'm not sure if G. thiersii is different than G. luteofolius - I find G. thiersii all the time, but I don't know exactly what G. luteofolius is.  G. thiersii was described from conifer just a few miles from my house, while G. luteofolius was described from birch in New York.

Perhaps one day I'll be able to get a sample that I am confident is G. luteofolius and see how it compares.

On the west coast I know of two active red Gymnopilus - G. thiersii with subcapitate cheilocystidia and G. dilepis with ventricose cheilocystidia.

I am also not sure what G. aeruginosus is.

Do you know of any nonactive look alikes?

Edit: on the West Coast!

The inactive ones tend to look a lot more boring, like G. sapineus.

Tricholomopsis rutilans can look a lot like G. thiersii, but it doesn't have gills that are as orange and a slightly different cap texture.

Seems like most people seem to think Dilepis is not active, this is not the case?
