Introduced Cubensis in Hawaii field?
    #27102611 - 12/22/20 02:19 PM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Hello all! This last week a friend found some mushrooms he believes to be P. cubensis growing in a Hawaii field that cows frequent. The interesting thing is though he has never heard of cubensis growing in a field here, it's seems that they are unmistakeably the real deal. I myself have ID'd quite a variety of mushrooms here in Hawaii and California, just not cubensis ever. So I figured it'd be best to ask the community here...

Habitat:
Cow dung in a grass field. ALWAYS on cow dung, not growing under or around. Typical tropical Hawaii environment(high humidity/temps in the 70 to 80 avg.

Gills:
colorwise I don't know how to described... hopefully the picture is enough. Gills are slightly attached

Stem: White, with purple veil. Slightly hollow with a stringy inside. Staining blue when bruised.

Cap:
1-3 in tan to orange brown, slimy when wet, convex with a slight umbo on the newer ones, flat on the older ones.

Spore print color:
Purple fresh. purple/dark brown after sitting.

Bruising:
Intense blueing, quickly I might add. much quicker than active Pan. species found here.

Smaller white ones look to be Copelandia which are stronger than the cubensis...any of the smaller ones staining blue?

Awesome man. Those are some beautiful cubes you found. Smaller white ones look to be Panaeolus Cyanescens also very fond of cow pies.

I See Psilocybe Cubensis & Panaeolus (Copelandia) Cyanescens, Could Be Some Inactive Pans In The Mix, Make Sure They All Bruise Bluish/Greenish Where Injured/Damaged, Nice Finds

Awesome! I feel much more confident with your affirmation. And yes those are little blue staining Pans. Our group of friends have grown up picking/eating them here so they're a pretty easy ID. Usually it's cyans/tropi and 2 other inactive pans-antillarum and papilionaceus scattered in the fields. That's why a cube find is kind of exciting. I always thought they'd be able to grow here but I can't recall if I've ever seen them before... Only reason we checked is because of the strong bluing reaction. What I'd like to know is how did they get here and propagate. By imported cattle? Intentional spreading? Maybe stray spores from growers out here? Either way we got an awesome harvest out of it!
