ID needed on possible Agaric/Amanita - Melbourne
    #2710096 - 05/21/04 07:54 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Hey people... how ya'll going?  Hopefuly shroomed up to the gills

I went out picking today at a few spots around Melbourne's south western subs and found a bunch of Fly Agaric shrooms... Now, i'm fairly experienced with gold tops, but not at all with these bastards...  I just wanna know if these would be aiight to munch... I know that A. Pantherina are deadly, and so don't wanna eat em until i'm sure that these aren't them....

Cheers Riley

Here's da photo's, they're a litle blurry, but OK....

First off, A. pantherina is not a deadly shroom and contains much more of the same toxins found in A. muscaria. However it is a dangerous mushroom and so is Amanita.

There are too many bad side effects to make Amanita;'s a pleasant trip[ although many people say they consume them.

If you are interested in Amanita muscaria I suggest you read R. Gordon Wasson's book, Soma: Divine Mushroom of Immortality.

That first image is really beautiful.

Also feel free to look over GumbyDude's ***PLEASE READ*** Forum Rules and Guidelines + Quick ID Tips

Quote:

Accurate mushroom descriptions

It is critical that you describe mushrooms fully and accurately in order to get a proper identification.

A good picture of the mushrooms is invaluable.

Along with the pictures (if possible), please include the following:

a. Habitat (where [state/province/country] and what does it grow on)
b. Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)
c. Measurements of cap and stem.
d. Characteristics of the stem (color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)
e. Characteristics of the cap (color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
f. Spore print color (very important!)
g. Color that the mushroom bruises
h. Scent of mushroom

For more detailed guidelines for describing your finds, please view this document.

For an explanation of mycological terms please refer to this document .

Most likely, though cannot see the bottom of the stem, which should bear concentric(?) rings/bands- otherwise only other possibillity would be a amanita parcivolvata, but, considering that it doesn't have a yellow(ish) stem and I don't believe they grow there, I'd say it's near to a safe bet. Gorgeous photos.

Well, they're definately Amanita musciara, but I still say you're crazy if you want to eat them. Read a few trip reports about Amanita muscaria and then think about if you'd still like to eat them.

Also it is safe enough to note the not- so- subtle differences in concentrations of certain chemicals in variants (regionally speaking and otherwise) that contribute to different effects. I have eaten amanitas from different areas of the country at different times and gotten far far different effects. Not all of them pleasant. These range from puking and horrible sweaty sheets to comfortably floating and loss of coordination from strikingly similar doses. Quite a gamble really. Heating them, as has been constantly re- iterated throughout like minded literature, helps immensely but will not keep you from puking, which you will inevitably do. A lot of people say Mary J helps with the nauseah- and it does- but for me and a couple of people I know personally it also potentiates more dramatic freaky effects, some of which I would not list as fun or "pleasant". Good luck.

Back in my ACT shrooming days we used to call them 'the big f*ck-off' mushy, cause that's kinda what their appearance 'says'... we were warned by the old hat we were with not to try them... seems it was good advice going on some of the reports on here...

Nausea shouldn't be a problem for me... I've never thrown up on anything i've ever taken...  but i will be prepared...

You are not suppose to heat the amanita muscaria mushrooms. They ae too be dried and then consumed.

That is how the Siberians eat them. ALl of the time. They do not make brews or potions of the juices.

mj

Otr they eat them fresh by milking them and mixing them with whey, but they never cook them. According to Ott it kills the high.

Still it is uncomfortable for most who try them and never do so again.

The pics are awesome smiles... I'd hang onto that attitude of being more interested in snapping shots (post any shroom pics at the shroomery with a state, magic or not if a well focussed shot) than scoffing amanitas ETC... Wise move, great pics !!!

Erowid says that heating causes a decarboxylation reaction with the ibotenic acid converting it to muscimol... Which is what causes the "high."
