Oysters ate the top layer of straw.
    #27100425 - 12/21/20 07:19 AM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Hi, I have some oyster mushrooms growing in some old fridges that have been modified in to grow chambers.

The substrate is pasteurized horse manure and coco fibres inoculated with Oyster mushrooms.
I put a pasteurized layer of straw on the to expecting the oysters to grow through the straw, but this time the mycelium ate the straw.

Do you think I should put another layer of straw on top?

Thanks.

I think your poo/coir/ straw sub is plenty for oysters. Most dont need or use a cassing anyway so your fine.
How deep is that substate? i dont think Poo is a common oyster substrate, wood would have been better.

Thanks for the quick reply

The substrate (coco/ manure) is around 6-7cm deep, and around 2cm of straw on the top.

The oysters liked the substrate (coco/ manure) last time I used it for the oysters, but the oysters did prefer the coco/ manure/ coffee. With the coffee it colonized faster.
I'll look in to putting some wood in the mix for next time.
