Habitat: base of large oak tree, sandy soil with ants building a home under the tree and seemingly mycelium.

Gills: everything looks a dried brown

Stem: white medium thickness

Cap:brown; all are dried with top most caps looking almost dead (maybe? Very new to mycology)

Spore print color: seems a dark brown

Bruising: will return shortly to check

Other information: ant hill booming around the base of this formation. Not 100% sure this was anything worth grabbing, or if the ants make it a no go for any reason

Maybe Armillaria sp.? Those mushrooms are not worth foraging, regardless of their edibility as a species. They are well past prime.

Close up shots of the cap, stem, and gills are helpful and often necessary to get a proper id. Your location in the world can also help. The more information you provide in your request increases the likelihood of an accurate id.

I encourage you to find some more mushrooms and post them here; I have found this process to be incredibly helpful.

I thought Armarilla sp. but there was possibly another unknown species I forgot what they were called.  But they grew in a group, had orange caps and a slight greenish stipe

Thanks for the feedback! Have attached some better pictures to include gills (most look pretty brown-ish) and the stem (hollow)

Base was still moist and not fragile as I expected; though bug damage seems to be contributing to decay

Armillaria sp. I've seen them in this state and they're probably super stinky as well haha

Good call -- looks closest to an Armillaria after some research. Thanks for the help!
