Pastywhyte’s Ez Tub Liners 4

Sup everyone
I’m just keeping it real these days, noticed people posting their tub liner methods. Man I hate liners, when ya get right down to it they are a serious pain in the ass. But scrubbing dead mycelium off tubs or harvesting side pins is even less fun IMO. So liners are a must for me. But I also have large clumsy mitts and a drinking habit. So some of the nuances of what works for most people is a waste on me...mainly cause I’m wasted. If you find other peoples methods work well for your workflow please ignore this, honestly it’s a nightmare compared to the streamlined methods I’ve seen others use. But for the drunk with size 11 gloves perhaps this might be easier.
First off I use Kirkland brand flex fit style trash liners from Costco. I accept no substitutes. The mycelium grips these like no other bag and holds it tight as it shrinks. If side pins are your concern I personally think these are the shit. Perfect texture. Second I use my Ezdial tubs for these. The 66 quart purple handled sterlite have perfect dimensions for this.

Okay so we got some trash bags. Now we need spawn, sub, scissors, and a tape gun. My sub is done in a big cooler and I use 10 hydrated litres (basically a litre = quart for the muricans) to a bag of spawn (basically 4 quarts). I also use a large ziplock container (1 litre) as a scoop, and painters tape for labels.

Now we take our trash bag and lay it out in the tub, I like to have the opening of the bag at the opposite short side. Do not open the bag up, just lay it out in the tub flat. Use the tape gun and tape up the bag a few inches above the holes. I like to be sure to have the long sides taped just above the holes despite there being play in the bag at that point. The extra material helps keep the corners from floating. Get it all laid out and taped in position, this makes it easy to mix the sub and spawn up without making a huge mess.
Scoop out 13 litres of substrate and level it out, break up the lumps. Then add your spawn, break it up and mix well. Once it’s homogeneous loosely level it all out.

Now we have our tub together it’s time to trim the liner. I basically just run scissors along the liner trimming it just below the holes. It doesn’t need to look super pretty, simply be functional. An easy way to do this is to hold the blades open and run the scissors or shears through like it was wrapping paper. Once the liner is trimmed I smooth out the sub where it may have been disrupted and get it all nice and level.

Next I measure out 2 litres of sub for the top layer and simply dump it in a pile in the centre of the tub. Then I spread it out nice and level, corner to corner. This part is important get it as even as possible, unlevel tubs will pin irregularly.

Now once it’s all spread out just put the lid on, take a strip of painters tape and place on the handle. Label what it is and the date spawned. Then sit back and let the magic happen.
This might not be everyone’s jam. But it’s what’s worked for me over the years

I use 3 mil black plastic sheeting. The 3 foot wide roll. If you fold them right you can make a few cuts and you'll have dozens of precut liners ready to go.
I'm right there with you, liners are a must for me but sure are a pain. I just hate trimming them up after tubs are spawned. I keep saying if they made pre-cut packs of individual liners I would buy them. Maybe that will be my new side business. ha

I just like it because its sturdy enough to pull the subs out. The kirkland brand bags are pretty sturdy. I actually used some kirkland contractor bags as a liner an hour ago because I'm out of sheeting. I've used some shitty garbage bags before that tear as soon as you try to move it.
I like the idea of using a trash bag to mix everything up then placing in the tub, I just haven't had good luck with it. Stuck in my ways.

Nice, thanks for the info and pics! Appreciate you and your clompy hands.
Are liners able to be reused by chance?

In theory you could. But plastic is cheap. Especially if there contaminated I wouldn't want to reuse them.

Naw the liners are one use only. I don’t really sweat it, a box of garbage bags isn’t that expensive.

How bout?
1. Turn your tub upside down, and measure length and width of footprint 2. Add 2x the sub height to both length and width, cut this size blank. 3. At each corner of blank, cut a 45 degree angle, the length of this cut is calculated as the square root of the quantity ((sub ht squared) + (sub ht squared)) e.g. for sub ht = 4”, square root of ((4 squared) + (4 squared) = square root of (16 + 16) = 5.7”
Center your liner in the tub, fold corners to make a perfect corner, fill, mix, level.
Shoebox version shown here: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27073259
Edit: Don’t know what your sub ht will be? 1. Divide the number of qts you will be using by the qt volume of your tub 2. Multiply the result of 1 by the ht of your tub; wahlah, sub ht.

I’ve done this exact thing years ago, in fact it’s one of the first methods of liner I tried. Unfortunately IME it’s not the best at gripping the sub as it contracts, despite having perfect corners. It’s easily one of the most ineffective methods of making a liner IMO.

Pro Tip: use 2 liners, inside one will contract with the substrate

Ever think about buying custom gusted liners to the fit the exact dimension of the tubs you use? You could mix up in the bag, put in tub, cut excess, done.

I used to pretape the liner using the base of the tub before I spawned it, I’d tape and wrap the corners like a Christmas present. It would come out pregussetted essentially. They used to look great in application but, I always found doing it like that left gaps as the sub shrunk. The corners need to suspend the weight of the sub slightly in order to really get attached as the sub starts to shrink. I worry that a pregusseted liner might not achieve that.

How do you know if your monotub needs a liner? Or does every monotub need a liner?

Monos don’t “need” liners, but they help minimize side pins and make cleanup way less annoying.
