thanks ferret! They are definately a unique. Hey MJ by motteling I think he means the brown on the stems that some of them have. Hey chrisss you will definately have more luck on eucalyptus mulch or woodchips then pine. I havent found any on pine myself yet, i think they tend to spring up later on pine. Here are more pics from the Mt Lofty Ranges

Looked for about an hour but didn't find any subs... heaps of mushrooms that look like subs though... the ones with the red stems and sub-like caps often look like subs when they are small because the stem is white at that point, these ones i'm talking about are almost always near a pine tree. Oh well...still had fun even though i didn't find anything. I'll try again in a week or so.

I hope you trim the MYC off of those stems asap and use it to spawn woodchip beds closer to home, everyone should do this.
Thats a very good idea!

BEST TIME TO HUNT
I have been told repeatedly by many hunters that just as the sun comes up is the best time to find subs. Apparently they get damaged by the sunlight after lengthy exposure. Can someone who has thought about this please shed some light on the issue.
Thanks

glad to help time223! hey scuy do you live in SA? I heard that rumour from a few people in Adelaide and it is absoloute crap as far as I know. The sun does change the colour of the cap but I doubt it would damage them shrooms are mostly in shade. I dry my shrooms before I eat them anyway heres a couple of wavies I found today more subs ... moss psilocybe!

OOISI,a friend and i find yellow caps at just one location in suburban melbourne.
Here's one compared to the 'regular' subs that we find in the same area.

Yeah the colour looks just like some of the ones i find. The cap of them is a lot more "bell shaped" though. Good find.

The reason the caps change color is becasue they are hygrophanous. They change color in drying. SOmetimes the pale-sttraw-yellow mixes witht he blue oxidation causing the edges and parts of the caps and/or stems to also become bruise a light green to aqua-green. IT is one of the many characteristics of the genus Psilocybe and many other genera.
