Seeking guidance.

Yep.. another newbie to the forum.  I just have a few questions before I decide to dive headlong into any 'experiments'.

I've read a ton of teks and have a good idea of my options, now I'm just trying to figure out which would be the easiest, safest (from contams), and best for a good yield.

Keeping in mind I'd be working with grain (popcorn), here's what I've come up with:

I could either case with 50/50 peat-verm, or attempt a bulk grow.  The thing is, I have access to rabbit poo, which I've heard works well enough.  I am curious about a few points though.

First of all, if I go with the bulk grow, how much poo would I probably need if I spawned it with a few pounds of grain?  It wouldn't be a huge operation obviously, but I figure I'd need about 10lbs(wet) of poo or so.  Does that about right?  Also, I'd probably pasteurize it in the oven, but the stove-top is also an option (I don't have access to a pressure cooker).  Rabbit poo isn't very stinky, and I'm thinking it would probably be even less after being leeched, but I'm still curious as to which pasteurization method is better odor-wise?

Bulk grow is what I'd prefer, as I probably wouldn't be working with a huge amount of substrate.  Still, casing seems like it'd be safer from contams, and possibly less complicated (considering this would be my first attempt).

So, which way should I go? <_<  >_>

Any thoughts/suggestions/ideas are welcome!  Thanks!

For you first time I suggest casings until you get the confident with basic procedures. But if you still looking to do bulk, the teks in FAQ explain most answers you seek. The amount of substrate for bulk depends on the container, mainly depth, preferably around 4".

yeah start with caseing or PF. if your new and you go straight to bulk w/o practice you might get turned off to the whole thing

Alright.  Thanks guys.  Casing it is.

Also, I forgot to ask.  Can I use crushed oyster shells only or is lime essential to 50/50?  I've seen teks that say use both, and I've seen some that say use one or the other.  Should I pick up a bag of lime, or will the shells be enough?

Follow the rych hawks 50/50 + for the casing mix, you use both crushed oyster shells and calcium carbonate with peat moss and vermicultie..... A little more expensive than what most people use, I nuke mine in the microwave with no problems... About to birth some casings actually in a few mins.

Use the pftek for simple minds when you do your cakes or I dunno if you got a bag or whatever. Boiling them in a stockpot seems fine for most people, just follow the tek for the first time, improvise later.

You could also use straight coco coir. It has no need for added ph stabalizer.

75% coir and 25% verm works pretty good.
