Field capacity and ways to alter it.

* warning * many will consider this overthinking... please ignore if thats not your cup of mushroom tea.

I have come to the belief that when hydrating organic matter (grains, coir) the amount of water it takes to reach the perfect field capacity can be altered depending on how the matter has been treated (or abused).

Case in point, I used to prep my coir by tossing a broken up brick of coir into a bucket, adding boiling water and putting a sleeping bag over it. Use it the next day. I came to believe I was "overcooking" my coir, thereby reducing its water holding capacity. I was right.

I changed to: Broken Coir in bucket, 190f water added, sleeping bag for 1 hour, then bag off, and box fan on bucket, use ASAP. The Coir can hold noticeable more water, and looks a lighter color. (these tests done with same coir)

I am finding similar traits with wheat.

Have others noticed this "breakdown of organic matter's ability to hold water?"

Prep coir cold then pasturize it and prep some with a typical bucket tek, check for field capacity and weigh them.
As for grain i dont want mine super hydrated just hysrated enough to be soft

I like mine dry too. But I have found if the kernels are still capable of pulling in water (like rice does for a wet cell phone) then it might cause the colonization to be hindered a bit. It seems the the perfect spot is right when the kernels can't pull in water, or very little.

And, over cooking grains seems to lower the amount of water it takes to reach that spot.
