Mycobag + 101 = a newbie's tears
    #2709298 - 05/21/04 02:13 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

I have been lurking for quite some time and so I must give the necessary thanks for such a great resource. Nonetheless, a friend of mine has decided to get into mushroom cultivation. He wanted to take it slow and so he determined to start with some Mycobags, move to Hippy?s neglect Tek and then onto more complicated procedures.

So this friend orders Ecuadorian spores from Spores101 and 6 Mycobags at Mycobag.
He gets all 6 Mycobags, but he gets PF classics instead of Equadors. He doesn?t really mind because he has heard that it is also a good beginner?s strain.

He followed the directions to the letter and made sure to sterilize everything, flame the needle tip and let it cool. He injected 1cc on the inside wall of the bag and 1cc in the middle. Then he mashed the bag up lightly. He then placed them in a plastic tub where they have been at a constant 75-80 Degrees.

It has been since the 5th, so about 15 days. He has seen absolutely no growth what-so-ever, not even contamination. He wants to cry, for if he can?t even handle a Mycobag, however will he get to the fun stuff?

Any ideas Gurus of Shroom? He heard very good things about Spores101, yet is it possible that their spores were a bad batch? Could it be the mycobag?

Thanks for any thoughts,
JC

patience is the key with mycobags
i've heard some horror stories about long colonization times
but i would try to raise yr temps a little
86 is optimal for incubation

They sometimes take 2+ weeks.

Don't worry about the temps, they sound fine. Better too cool than too hot.

In another week, if you see no growth, inoc again. 2.5cc is recomended (But less is fine). All on the wall, spores in the middle are as good as lost. Mash the bag good. It can take it. It should feel like potting soil inside the bag. Before inoculating again, smell the patches, if they don't smell like dirt, they contaminated.

Good luck.

PF is known for its potent aborts.

Oh, and welcome to The Shroomery!

I had a similar experience... but one bag was lost to bacteria.

A cotton ball covered with alcohol cools the syringe well.
