The fact that this isn't the overwhelming answer speaks to how many people have never had their life saved by a surgeon. It doesn't matter they are sociopathic, they are literally flawless at something where mistakes result in a DEATH. Mad respect, gtfo of here with people who make you feel "warm" that is not the same as respecting the ability/profession someone can pull off. Even fireman get respect for their courage, but have little "true skill" that couldn't be replaced by someone else with a years training. That's what I respect, the fact that a good surgeon has a positive W-L record in terms of successful fatal situations, that's a winner right there. If you think a surgeon isn't the hardest job in the world (up there anyway) you probably think you could quarterback for an NFL team too

A close friend of mine is a neurosurgeon. He just got board certified. He completed: 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, 7 years of residency, and another year of fellowship.
Many people respect doctors. Most don't realize how much more effort and difficulty it takes to become a neurosurgeon.

[Edit]
I gave an answer but I think there's a flaw in the premise...
Like the Native American drawing of animals in a circle, with humans just part of it, I think the correct view is to view all rather equally important.
I think this is why people chose garbage collector as one, as a way of balancing out the other answers.
All are important, some people view hairdressers as most important, and while others might consider them shallow for this, I don't because that's their view and it's valid.

For instance if you let the garbage pile up, civilization is over in a few weeks at best (garbage fills up the streets and houses, no one can drive, etc.)
Take away surgeons and humanity still goes forward, just less a few people.
(I'm not trying to hurt feelings here just giving an observation.)
Sanitation workers are vastly, vastly more essential to society as a whole and the quality of living.
And to the health.

This coworker I had not too long ago -- real young dude, he would legit call in sick if it got below 45 degrees
He even told the boss that
"I don't leave home if it's sub-45"
needless to say he didn't last long lol

Chemists.
Seriously though medical clinicians and other medical lab workers. I've seen multiple people put doctors, surgeons and nurses on pedestals in this thread, but without those lab results they wouldn't really be able to do shit. I lump these people under the chemist umbrella for what it's worth.
