Heads up - Instant Pot Duo 8 quart on sale for $74 at Amazon. This one holds four quart jars on the trivet. Iβve used mine for years with 100% success. No green jars due to incomplete sterilization, ever.
For someone who does not need the higher capacity of a Presto or AA, this is the bomb. I also cook food with it - itβs excellent at that too.

How long do you run your grain cycles?

Vent 10 minutes then 2:45 at max pressure. Iβve worked mainly with oats, just starting with wbs and millet. So far similar timing seems to work. Fwiw I can easily run 3 batches in 24 hours. Thatβs 12 jars / 3 tubs with just a few minutes attention at the beginning and end.

I snagged one of these recently for agar/LC

Made for canning so it hits 15psi, and even has a built in vent timer cycle
can be set manually for much longer than my off brand 13 qt (gowise) IP. Gonna keep that one for pasteurization because its so big and damn convenient but hooing these electic βcannersβ get made more and bigger like IPβs did. Presto made one for s little but it got discontinued..

I keep waiting to find an 8qt, and passing up practically brand new 6qt duo and lux models at goodwill and value village left and right.. besides the first one I got that was mint. About to say heck with it, and buy 2 more 6 qts. I'll need roughly 30 amps to run 3 at once, lol. 15 small mouth pint jars at once isn't so bad, set and forget, right?
On Sundays, they have 50% off at goodwill, so you can get one for $20 usually, if its the right tag color. Always 2-3 of them, at any of the second hand stores you go to around here. Some you can tell were never used once, because the sealing ring doesn't smell at all, and not a scratch in the pot. Even have the protective plastic wrap on the buttons still.
People selling used IPs online all want like 50 for one they used the heck out of for the last 5 years.. ya no thanks. Brand new ones are 60-90. I'll take 3 for $60 from the second hand stores myself
How about 5? Would you rather have a 23qt presto, or 5 IPs with built in timers?

The delay start feature would come in real handy if trying to run multiple sets of IPs on your countertop, without tripping the breakers. Set them to go off in pairs, so your not pulling more than a few thousand watts at any time. Come home from work and have a fleet of like 6-8 pots full of jars good to go. IPs are a dime a dozen now, and replacement parts are cheap. Haha

Does anyone vent their instant pots for agar? OP doesn't mention it, but most people who use actual pressure cookers do. I find it odd that he vents for grain but not for agar. Anyone know the reasoning?

Always vent. The only thing I use my instapot for in this hobby is agar and I vent for 15 minutes.

Do you mind if I ask how long you PC for? I feel iffy about PCing agar for 20 minutes at 12 PSI when that is the minimum recommended for 15 PSI.

I have been waiting on my pressure cooker but weather has affected it's delivery. I have one of these and this will help me get started while I wait for the pressure cooker. Thank you for the awesome recipe at the end

Fwiw - both methods work.
I do not do any additional venting for no-pour agar or LC. The spaces within the plates of agar and jars of broth are far less insulated and far more conductive to heat than the centers of quart jars loaded with grain. Additionally, the IPβs internal volume is tiny compared to a Presto or AA canner. Dead air spaces just arenβt a thing in this situation.
I typically cook agar and LC for 25 minutes and have had 100% success with sterilization over years of IP use.

The only reason I had asked was because I have had good luck so far with doing 25 minutes for my single media bottles with no vent. The last cycle I did two 500ml bottles and almost all my plates were contammed out, with no change in my technique. I could only assume they didn't get fully sterilized. Hoping 45 minutes + vent works better this time.

Check offer up. For $50 I just scored a brand new insta pot pot as well as the instapot vision pro air fryer with works great as a dehydrator.
Would normally cost about $250 from Amazon. But they sell a lof of open/damaged box return items on offerup. Sure, the items may come with a couple dings but so what?
If your in a major metropolitan area your likely to find dozens of resellers. Just verify the item has been tested and has all parts.

I needed an electric pressure cooker because I couldn't use my parent's stove. I bought an Instant pot for like 70 dollars after tax and it actually ended up being a minor expense compared to the total of all the other supplies. I spent 10 dollars on a 56qt clear tub from Walmart if that gives you an idea of how much more expensive things are in 2023.

I live in a city and was able to find an 8 quart Instant Pot on fb marketplace for $20. Sure it was secondhand but can't beat the price.

Potentially didnβt transfer heat well enough to the middle of your bags/jars. Steam transfers heat better. Thatβs the gist I believe.
