It peaks at 15 psi, it nominally runs at 11-13 psi. I do 45 mins for agar. 30 gave me no real issues but better to side with caution as the only technical paper I could find said 45.

I always do 20 minutes for agar in the instant pot and never have contam issues. To each their own! 40 isn't going to hurt

Thank you for this great write up.
my pleasure, I'm glad you like it.
Yep, it sucked pretty bad, but it was an opportunity to take a break and start fresh. I'm just now getting back up and running in a minimal setup.

This is great. I have my giant pc but this would help when I’m trying to make an inconspicuous batch of agar

I’m trying this today. I have an 8 quart IP Ultra, and I just ran the cycle on 4 bottles of agar. Going to fill 50 plates today for a bunch of upcoming experiments.
The cool thing about the ultra is you can set a custom keep warm temp, so after my Instant Pot cycle was up, I set the keep warm temp to 120 so I’ll have enough time to pour all the plates while the agar is cool enough to minimize condensation, but no risk of it getting to cold to keep pouring. I’ll report back on how well this works.

So my review:
I did the IP sterilization and set my warm temp to 120. Ran it and let it sit and wait until I was ready to pour. Poured 50 plates and all 4 bottles were 118 degrees when I grabbed them. Seemed to work great. Got more condensation than I was hoping for, but that’s because I pour too thick, not the IP TEK. Hopefully these are all sterile and ready to go!

Used this tek several times now with popcorn, 2.5hrs on high pressure, followed by NR overnight, cause I'm not in a rush.
I typically let my jars sit for a week or so before nocking up, to see if any nasties grow, and I'm not in a rush. Haven't had an issue yet.
I do need to try this tek for agar, since I'd like to dip my toes in agar work.

Agar is the most fun part of the work imo. And the IP version was way more pleasant than running a PC.

I upgraded to a used instant pot max just before I found this tek, mostly for the 15psi. After reading, I decided to resell it and stick with the 8qt ip duo. I do jars infrequently so a 3 hour run overnight is just fine.
I had the ip duo long before I used it for grain jars. It was running 3 qt jars fine with the trivet before I read this. Trying out 4 jars tonight with a towel in the bottom. Always happy to use what I have and not accumulate more gear. And getting more and better use out of it now too.
Thank you!

Spend the extra $9 and get the 8 quart. I have both 6 and 8 quart instant pots and my media bottles fit better in the 8.
But yes, that duo should do the trick. The ultra is a little nicer since it has the customizable keep warm temp to keep your agar bottles at pouring temp longer.

Can't find the 8 quart model on the Swedish market. Only 6. Will it be to tight for jars (15cm hight) and plastic bags?

These things are not ideal for grain, but for agar they work great.

Questions :
1- Even though it's steaming, the timer for the Steam cycle never turned on, any ideas why? 8 quart just like yours
2- you say 20 mins for agar: does that include pasty plates? does the extra surface/air/containers mean it should stay longer? ive been doing 45ish. I just need to find a straight bottom cause my steam rack I use there leaves me with some slanted plates.
3- Would you say hyour success has been consistent with grains? Doing oats today because I cant figure out where the fuck my weight for my Presto went

I wish there were more programmable PSI pressure cookers. set 15 psi, 90 minutes, etc.

Interesting thread!
Currently hesitating between getting one of these two which are available on the market where I live - 10L PC Tefal "Eco minute" - 7.5L Ninja Foodi 9-in-1 (model OP500EU).
The tefal one can cook at 117 C (so about 13 PSI). Clearly indicated in the spec sheet.
Can't find any such specs about the Ninja except when asking their customer service they said that it runs between 50 and 120 kPa - which is pretty vague. I'm guessing it peaks at 120 and runs a fair bit lower. There is a HI and LO setting and they couldn't even narrow down the ranges for those two settings.
I was leaning toward the PC. It has a couple of advantages apart from actually knowing the temp and pressure. - Less bulky (for it's volume) - More volume - I think dishwasher safe - Cheaper - Doesn't take up prime real estate on a bench top
Now though, after skimming this thread, I'm less sure. Frustrating :P

Id be concerned that the eco minute couldnt hold enough water for 1.5-3 hour sterilization runs at those temperatures.
Why cant you hold out for something bigger?

Dude I use an Intantpot, because I've got one. At my scale it's great. But experiments have shown that other brands of electric pressure cooker do not perform as well.
I'll upgrade to a proper PC soon though
