nonamekevin,
I always use the trivet that comes with the IP. Lids would work too.
Contrary opinion: I don't leave the vent open. The red popper takes care of releasing air as steam builds and pressure rises. I close the lid, turn it on, walk away.

I think i read somewhere that part of venting is to allow air to escape from your vessels to increase your odds of success. Bringing it to pressure too quickly might allow the air inside the pc to escape, but not from the bottom of your jars.

On my model it is physically impossible to close the lid with anything under the jars, but it you can that's cool. It doesn't make any difference though. I've never had any issue in countless batches, but in the presto it's necessary of course.
For the venting, if it works for you that's cool too. In my opinion, growing is all about what you can get away with.

This thread inspired me to give it a try yesterday.
I pc'd a 30oz container of yellow popcorn on high pressure for 45min. Water was about an inch above the corn. It probably could have gone for an hour, as it didn't feel as tender as when using a presto pc for 30min. Dried the corn on a towel on the counter until no moisture was observed on a paper towel, and filled 3qt jars aittle less than 2/3 full. Unmodified lids flipped over and cracked open a 1/4 turn before getting wrapped in foil and placed in the instant pot.
I filled the instant pot with water so that a little more than 1/3 of the jar was in the water. I do kind of like the idea of leaving the vent open and waiting for steam to come out, not for any other reason than most times, my instant pot won't pressurize on its own without me having to push down on the lid to get it to seal. I noticed yesterday that by leaving the vent open, my pressure indicator was already popped up, so I just had to close the vent and I was rocking.
Also, I misread the time for the grain, so I went 2.5 hours instead of the 3hrs recommended. Let the pressure naturally reduce and removed the jars.
Im not ready to inoculate anytime soon, so this may be a good thing to have the jars sit and see if any contam shows up. Foil is kept on, lids are still cracked open 1/4 turn. Hopefully 2.5hrs was good enough.

Brilliant tek. Thank you for sharing. Is it safe to put quart jars in like that? The pressure cooker line indicator is lower than the top of the jars.

Kevin that's great!! The 2.5 hours is probably fine. You will find out before long if it isn't. Keep me updated.
Thanks Sponglord, I hope you find it useful. That line is for pressure cooking things like soup. You don't want to go above the line in that case, but jars it's fine and totally safe. Also when sterilizing the jars the water is not above that line.

Anyone have any experience using the Crock-Pot knock-off of the Instant Pot for this? Best I can find is that it maxes out around 9ish PSI.

It will work, but you might need a longer cook time. The instant pot runs at 10-11 psi basically. The 3 hours is a little extra long though, you can try 3-3.5 hours. Let the jars sit for a week at least if you want to test them. More likely two.

Can't wait to give this a go. Couldn't access this page over the past month or so .
Just to be sure , when you are making grain jars, you don't use the trivet? do you place any jar rings or anything under the jars at all?

I read somewhere if your lid won't close using the trivet place a folded dishtowel (or anything like it) on the bottom.

Adding a placeholder to outside verification that the Instant Pot can sterilize similar to an autoclave. I added it here, because I come back to this post so much.
Swenson, Vaille Alena, "Assessment and verification of commercially available pressure cookers for laboratory sterilization" (2019). Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations. 331. https://scholar.dsu.edu/theses/331
Dakota State University student Vaille Swenson recently conducted research upon the Instant Pot and came up with the conclusion that the Instant Pot is quite effective at sterilizing all bacteria including the toughest survivors of the lot.
Minimal Time to sterilize
- Nutrient Agar: 15 minutes
- Soil/Dirt Water: 45 minutes
- Dissection scissors: 30 minutes
It took 150 minutes to inactivate the Geobacillus stearothermophilus spore.

I've done agar in mine a few years ago and it did great. Getting back into things so I was glad to find your post to give me all the details again to run it. And the keep warm function is brilliant...didn't think of that. Thanks again!

I have a 6 quart instant pot. Perfect for wide mouth 1/2 pint BRF jars. Water to the height of the trivet. 4 jars on the bottom, 3 on top. Top jars adjusted to avoid the release valve. 120 minutes on high pressure with the stay warm function off. I do not vent, just set and forget. Also does spareribs in under 20 minutes once it’s up to pressure.

I have been gone for a while because I lost my lab in a flood, so I am just seeing this, but thank you! That's amazing. Pretty cool that it lines up with the 2.5 hour time that people have discovered through trial and error. Thanks for sharing!

For me grain goes in my 75x, Litterally everything else goes in the IP. Agar pour and no pour, lc, water for li, syringes, tools, casing, Litterally everything. Having stuff more or less automated makes life much easier.

Great tek!
I'll try to use my InstaPot Duo for agar. Very convenient for small jobs.
For agar, I'm currently doing 20 minutes@15PSI in Presto. Are 20 minutes enough for agar in InstaPot?
There is a newer InstaPot Max model which can achieve 15 psi.
