Hi guys... just wanted to ask a question... I spawned Wbs to horse manure, coco coir and verm 1:1:1 sub in a 2 liter (0.5 gallon) shoebox container. The sub is about 2 inch deep. Layered it thin layers sub... thin layers spawn and finished with few mm of sub just so that no grains is showing. Covered it with tin foil and poked a few holes for fae. The problem I'm having is that its white colored tubs so i can't see through to see the progress. I don't want the sub to contam if i open it before full colonization. How do i go about the problem?

Fruiting is not a sterile procedure, you can look at them I'd just not want to mess up the micro climate for them as they are sensitive. Clean spawn is what matters.

2” deep in a shoebox sounds a bit thick to me as well.

i actually run my pan subs at 1.875 inches thick or 1- 7/8ths with an .125 or a 1/8th inch deep casing giving me a total of a 2.0 depth.

Damn. Good to know. I’ve always been hesitant to go over 1.5” in smaller footprints.

That's why I like the glass trays. You just can't fuck it up. There's no room to go over.

use a 50/50 peat moss and vermiculite mix about an eighth inch deep. ph balanced to 7.5 with a lil calcium carbonate. i shoot gor 7.5 but anywhere in the 7-8 range is ok. i ise the food grade calcium carbonate from walmart
a casing should be a non nutritious layer

i mean u can try n case with coir n verm if u have to but its a shitty way to do it and will lead to issues most likely. i gave it a try before and it was shit. it overlayed like hell and molded fast as fuck too.
i just cant suggest it is all cuz peat n verm is clearly a much much better choice and peat is easy as hell to locate so there really is no need to not do it other than bein lazy and not wantinv to spend 10$ and a lil time at walmarts garden section. or any other home supply shop

You see the thing is all i can find is coco coir, vermiculite, perlite and horse manure where i live.... and then there is palm peat which i guess is the same as coco coir
