Anyone else like making things or taking on longer projects as a way to get through the winter? 1

I like to take on longer projects during the winter to keep myself occupied when the suck of the cold sets in. Im sure I can’t be the only one.. You’ve got to have a coping mechanism or something to look forward to, to get through it right? At least if you’re in the north.. Here’s the last winter project that I’ve kinda finished. Still needs a final coat of lacquer, buffing and a better nut, but don’t we all..

I’ve made a bunch of random things to keep busy over past winters and like to try and switch it up to keep it interesting so this is my first guitar/instrument. The only parts I didn’t make myself are the tuning machines and the rosette (kicking myself for that) next one will be better.. I bummed shop time from a friend for the processes that required larger machines, and I made all of the jigs/go-bar so that they can come apart easily and stack with my hand tools in a tupperware for transport. I built the majority of the guitar itself when I was in between places, traveling a lot for work, staying at friends apt, etc.. Not the most ideal circumstances but, where there’s a will there’s a way.. Keeping the moisture levels and humidity consistent when joining the various parts was the biggest/most frustrating challenge honestly.

For those interested, it’s built from plans of a 1966 José Ramirez spanish classical guitar, Indian rosewood back, sides, and bridge, engelmann spruce top and bracing, mahogany back bracing, spanish cedar neck, gabon ebony fretboard, bindings, headstock back, and armrest, natural bone nut and saddle, luminlay glow in the dark fret markers, evo gold jumbo frets, mother of pearl anchor inlay, linoleum block printed makers label, and an ipe and leather cejilla/capo made from scraps, a partridge in a pear tree, yada yada yada..
The stand is hand forged steel (a lot of hammering 💪 in a forge a friend and I had made as a previous winters project ⚒) hot sealed in blackened beeswax and wrapped with old boot leather where it makes contact with the guitar. Like a real octopus it has eight tentacle tips and folds/disassembles easily for transport though its quite heavy.
I still have to learn to play classical better but being on my own guitar makes practicing more enjoyable at least.
Anyone else here like making things in the winter to pass the time? Instruments? Tools? Knives? Motorcycles? Planes? Boats? Clothing? jewelry? Models? Glass? Write a book? Bikes? Furniture? 3D art? Hand puppets? Computers? Sculptures out of your own feces💩? Anything big or small? The “novelty grows” over in the cultivators forum are really cool imo, and so is a lot of art in the art forms; what else does everyone do? What helps you all cope through the dark and cold? Winter time is closing in where I’m at; good time to start focusing on something new and nerd out.. Lets see watcha all got cooking?

Very nice work, you probably could make good money making guitars like that on a regular basis.
This is a puppet I started working on in the fall. Got off track with the project though.

Thanks man, I appreciate the compliment! Id probably have to build a few more before I got to the point where I would feel comfortable charging someone for it, it has mistakes.. It was fun to make and I do have a second one already started but with so many other talented builders/luthier’s out there it’s likely to stay a hobby for now at least. Jack of all trades master of none.
Your puppet is dope! Exactly what I hoped to see! I’ve never seen anyone make one before. I like your use of bone (deer?) for the “head actuation handle” I don’t know what it’s called? Are those bike brake cables for the jaw? That thing looks really fucking cool! What more did you have planned for it? I’d love to see it when you’re finished. Have you made any other puppets before or is this your first?

Yeah those are bike brake cables. Getting the jaw operating nicely was kind of where I got stuck. The wood piece with the holes is from a crutch. Had some ideas for making it pivot along that axis too. I was thinking to eventually cover the neck with a stretchy knit fabric. And for the back/body I have this reindeer fur.
Ultimately I want the whole thing to look kind of like a "nithing pole":

I have done some other experimenting with building puppets but most of it was a long time ago. One that I put a fair amount of time into was a bird with some similar head and neck movement to the deer one. That one was made mostly from coat hangers and wire.

That tentacle guitar stand is nuts too by the way.

Yes I grow medical marijuana, I like the end product alot but I really enjoy the process of growing. Perfect thing to do when stuck inside all winter.
