Aphids on my Kratom tree
    #27088002 - 12/13/20 09:32 PM (3 years, 2 months ago)

What's up guys! I seem to have an aphid issue on my 8' Rifat. Any suggestions on organic solutions to kill these bastards? If no organic works, I'm willing to go non-organic if it works in only one or two treatments.

Thanks!

Squirt aphids with soapy water or just do what I do when I buy infested plants, submerge in soapy water.

A soap and neem oil solution worked for me on cannabis plants.  I used both at 1 tablespoon per gallon of warm water.  You want castile soap made with potassium hydroxide, dr bronners is a good brand.  I wouldn't spray anything more than castile soap and water, maybe some EO's as well, if you plan on consuming the leaves.

The trick is going to be being thorough, as that's a pretty tall plant.  You'll want to spray often, perhaps 3x a week or so.  Since aphids usually give live birth, they aren't too difficult to get rid of.  However, the fuckers are born pregnant, so if you miss even one they will come back.

After spraying your final time, you may want to release some green lacewing larvae to hunt down any survivors.

I use Children's soft pistil tooth brush, it's actually very satisfying killing them. After a new leaf forms and breaks out of the skin i remove the thin layer skin that it grew in seems to be a hot spot for them.

I spray them off with water! No need to do much anything else but that with aphids

Bugs were eating up my lemonbalm up outside. I bought a 2 pack of lemongrass from my local supermarket, cut up a half and put it in the soil... I never had another bug take a single bite from that plant again. Idk too much about these aphids, but I know Lemongrass is great for natural pest control.

I have read if you wash of aphids they can not climb back up on the plant so just spraying off with the hose is effective.

There is one kind of fast growing vine weed that pops up in my garden a lot and green aphid love it more than anything else.  If I don't catch the weed quick enough aphids will start grabbing onto tomatoes or whatever touching the vine nearby.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Ive been hitting the leaves with the hose for a few weeks. It seems to work for a bit then I start seeing the sticky sap again forming. I'll try some of the suggestions here.
Thanks again!

Make sure you get under the plant and point the sprayer upward to get the undersides of all the leaves. Aphids love to hang out underneath the leaves, so sparing the plant from the front, or above wont get the aphids hiding underneath

-- Finest silica (broken rocks) or diatomaceous earth (chalk powder). Water from the bottom, to prevent it from rinsing off the leaves.

-- Soap-suds making plants.

-- None of the above, if you want beneficial insects to survive. I've caught small handfuls of ladybugs, for free, and thrown them in my greenhouses. But, they can probably be found, cheap, year round, online.

Teeny bugs are definitely caught by native spiders which are adaptable pets that become fat and happy in terrariums.
