How long should poppy seed remain viable?...If kept at room temps and away from light and moisture?
Any suggestions for long term storage?
I have a pound or two of seed that a fella from around here gifted me a few years ago, and from the plants I grew last year I have about another pound or two of seed.
I consider this seed to be very valuable in regards to what it can produce and provide, I def would like to preserve em' and keep em' viable for as long as possible.
So far I've just kept the seeds sealed in plastic bags in my closet....so they aren't exposed to light, sit around 65 to 70 degrees and around 55% humidity. I'm assuming keeping them in the fridge/chilled would be the most ideal for long term storage?
I still have a bunch of pics from the plants I grew last spring that I never posted in this thread lol. I'll get around to that eventually, sometime before next spring .

Oh man, I'm getting excited! My poppy garden is going to be epic this spring!!!
I'm going to go the indoor route again, and have some big cabbages ready to go out early.
All the plants that had a two month head start indoors, created much bigger plants with multiple pods per plant, and all the ones that I just sowed directly made smaller one podded plants only.

The funky weather made my poppies come up in late June/July. I did not have seeds to start indoors. Grew like 16 decent plants with average 3 pods each. I’ve seen a grow on another site where homeboy claimed he could harvest 20 pods from one plant. The plant was huge and it was started 6 months or something ahead indoors. I haven’t had any sap producers to write home about but it’s bc they weren’t ready with the weather! I’m planning on starting a some indoors and direct sowing some also. Maybe my subaeruginosa will help them grow outside this time ; )

Just like your Canna, and from the looks of it everything you grow lol, beautiful poppies there Nicko!
I enjoy seeing the sunshine & plants being grown down under there while it's cool & damp & dim up here in my part of the world.
I'll be sowing some of my first poppy seed of the season in about a month, which will be the first seed in general of the new year/new grow season that I sow. I might try to start some indoors like allium does just for the sake of experimenting and see if I can do it. The small patch I had growing last year by tossing/spreading seed by hand and tamping it down lightly did just fine though.
I'm going to try growing a couple different varieties this next time around too.

I understand tea is generally best (though I prefer pod-powder smoothies) - are there any teks for converting or using bulk pods in other forms? I have a few gallons and smoothies get a lil old.
Also, what do y'all feel about shelf life? Fresh is definitely 10X cooler, but I have some 5 years old that still do the trick on a Sunday afternoon.
That sort of chit chat is more fitting for the "other drug discussion" forum or the "chemistry" forum. We don't discuss much beyond making a cup of tea in this thread/forum, and even that is technically against the rules of this specific forum on the shroomery lol. (the ethnobotanical forum is mostly just about growing the plants)

It should be flowing out as soon as it's cut.
The plants could be too dry.
Lancing wont yield you much anyway.
Probably better to simmer that whole plant in water 3 times, filter and reduce that to a tar.

It has to be done right after it drops it's peddles, those look a little old. Plus just save the pod, way easier.

mine ooze without being cut, they'll just start spotting and occasionally a big blog will seep out. TBH it's not worth the effort.

Some varieties just don't let out much latex.
One variety I grew a couple years ago would only form a tiny bead/drop of latex after being cut...The variety I grew last year, it was like slicing open a bag of milk, there was a ton of latex that came pouring out so much so it was dripping off the pod onto the ground lol. I lanced just a couple out of curiosity and left everything else untouched, I don't lance my pods or grow them for collecting the latex specifically.
Like others have mentioned, it is much more efficient & effective to use the whole plant/pod rather than lancing the pods just for the latex.
