Sketchy Eco Earth PSA

I break up my Eco Earth bricks before hydrating them and the other day when I was prepping some substrate I found a glass shard a couple inches long and wide. Then a few days before that I found a long rusty nail in another brick of Eco Earth.
Please be careful when prepping your substrates with these cheap ass dusty ass bricks of coir. I'm fortunate I didn't slice or stab myself.
Ended up switching to loose, dry-sifted "100% coir" from the hydroponic store cuz this shit is ridiculous.
Forgot to take photos of the sketchy bricks at the time, sorry.. Please be safe everyone

Yea I found a rusty piece of metal in a brick of eco earth once. Never glass but yea be careful, if I had reptiles I would look through it carefully before they would get it. But its a ag product and shit gets into some of it, no different than bugs in your cornflakes lol.

CannaCoir from a grow shop has been nothing but consistent if you have one near you. So much cheaper than buying eco earth too.

I have found pretty large chunks of rusty pointy metal before, wasn't a nail but still..
Having been working with a different brand of coir lately and I notice eco earth expands like shit these days too. 10 years ago it expanded to a much larger volume. I use beats peat brand these days and 625 grams of it will expand to a larger volume than 700 grams of eco earth. It holds way more water too, which is obviously good for our purposes.
I definitely think people should explore alternative sources of coir. Eco earth is decent if you have nothing else but visiting a hydroponic shop or checking online if you can find something cheaper or around the same price may benefit your grows.

Hate Eco Earth, it's like 20% sand, barely holds water. I'm hooked on Plantonix.

Never had any problems with Eco Earth I just get it because it's available locally. Might give that Canna a shot. Beats Peat is shit, so fibrous and nothing but problems with it.
I swear my theory about different cultivars of coconuts has got to be correct that mold resistance is tied to which cultivar your pith came from. Coconut cultivars in India ain't the same as Thailand ain't the same as other places. King Coconut v.s. other vars etc. Guaranteed much like variety in apples some vars have less of the antifungal oils in em or whatever.

I just got some cannacoir, I am also sick of the amount of sand that is mixed in the eco earth bricks. Hopefully this will be coir and no other mystery mixed in.

I use some stuff called "Cyco" (lol in my head I say "psYCHO!!" like a bad ass mental patient every time I read the label). I am not in my element trying to hydrate loose coir; 650g loose doesn't take the same water as 650g brick.! Oh well, this is fun figuring it out and finally using some clean ass coir
And yeah fuck all that sand!!!

I'ts about 5k USD to get a full truck container from any number of coir suppliers. There are hundreds of coir suppliers worldwide. Back when I was into the hydroponics industry I looked into getting bulk delivered like that.
A dollar a brick (the big square ones) for a truckload...

I use roots organic brand hydro coir, it costs 8.50 after taxes where I'm at for a 5kg block which, for me and my methods, makes 8 monotubs so it comes out to basically a buck per tub.
Been thinkin of getting a bulk order from them have space to store it now

Roots is good. I use a lot of canna cause they sell it close by and it is good quality and cheap.

Yeah, Psilo, I feel ya. I just started using a 5kg brick of CocoTek a buddy gave me...and holy shit the difference in quality compared to Eco and the other pet store stuff. I'm not growing at a scale where I need to cut costs on coir so I don't think I am ever going back to the cheap stuff.

Also found my yields increased by 20% after ditching Eco Earth, with the sand, holds minimum water, and in general the myc doesn't like it that much, think it's too compacted with the sand. It just sucks, and when you start working with coir meant for growing, you'll notice a huge quality difference, and you'll never use reptile coir again, lol.

I think peat would have to be ph balanced.
Like everyone else I started out with eco from the pet store then found 5kg blocks of high quality stuff and never went back.
