When I dig down into it all, I can clearly see lots of white wispy mycellium, so I know it either likes what I'm feeding it, or that it's mycellium from other mushrooms.
My area of Kentucky is devoid of ovoids! The drive to find them is over 30 miles north of me, which is no big deal when you drive, but I don't, so it's virtually impossible for me to get a ride to my spots every season.
This all being said, what are the chances that my patch could fruit this coming spring? Can they fruit the following year, or does it usually take more than one season?
I know this isn't a post of any ovoids that I've found, but I figured that some of you guys probably know the answer to my questions about growing them regardless, so I figured I'd just post this here
Don't over feed the patch. Usually I add new material every 2 years and it seems to do great.

Chances are you should get a spring flush. Transplant some of the colonized wood inside into a tub. They do great in the basement and you can force them to fruit early

Oh yeah, I was just stating that I wanted to get it checked on before it gets too cold outside for me, not the mycellium
It's supposed to get unusually freezing cold here within the next couple of days, and my butt doesn't venture outside too much during the cold times here, because I detest cold weather!

This is good to know
I only mixed in some wood debris one or two times, and then a couple of other times I just piled on some river sand, old wood chips, old potting soil full of wood shavings, and a final top layer of leaves. I didn't plan on messing with it again until I add new spawn to it next season. That's if I can make it to my spots.
I hope I do get a flush this coming spring, but as far as bringing some colonizing wood in the house in a tub, unfortunately I can't do that.
Thanks for the replies guys, I'm learning so much here

I saw some today the survived the snow but didn't have a camera. They are very resistant to cold compared to other sp except for maybe galerina or tubaria

I think the only months I’ve never found an ovoid are September and February

This sounds like a challenge, just January and February left for me we will see.

Well crap fellas, I only hunted for them from April through June here and I never saw them again until the following season, but it's because I didn't bother going back to check
This is good news to hear for sure, and maybe I have a longer season here than I once previous thought.!!!

So, I went out and dug a little bit down into my man made ovoid patch, and boy that myc has spread through all the new substrate that I fed it like crazy!
I hope it fruits this year! It will save me trying to bribe someone to give me a ride the 30 miles up north to my spot.

Was passing by one of my patches today and stopped for some pictures, the cold snap didn't really phase them, there were so many we decided to go out picking by the river.

My only ovoid spot is 30 miles north of me,and I have no ride.
I caught that snake back in the summer, and he posed oh so nicely for me, a first with a freshly caught reptile

I dont know how well your box and cans will do. Should have found leaves from the surrounding area to cover them with instead but ehh guess we'll find out
