Started peruvian torch and san pedro from seeds today 1

I planted 10 san pedro seeds and about 50 peruvian torch seeds. I expect this to be a slow process that could take years. How long before they are mature? Does one species grow faster than the other?

It's been so long since I stated any cactus seeds, but my trichs seemed to take only a couple of weeks to germinate, maybe less from what I remember.
I'll be starting some soon too, I guess we'll both find out

Seeds started at the beginning of the season in the south in a greenhouse, Zone 8B, will grow between 1-3". If you graft them very early, you can get between 4-8" and rarely an exceptional 10-12" graft if you select a really strong pereskiopsis mother plant or swap the scion from Pereskiopsis to a heavier, well established stock.
Yes, some varieties may grow faster. (Scop X Bridgesii), (Scop x ADL Macrogonus), grew faster than just about else but that is just my unscientific observation; those topped out at 2.5-3". The rest of the varieties are hit and miss based on environmental factors.
If you de-graft a vigorous specimen from the previous year and plant it in the spring, using a fairly rich soil mix, it may grow to 10-18".
Once you get your technique and methodology down, and have the resources to work with, the process doesn't take long at all. I recommend dropping $100 on seeds and sowing a few thousand various genus (Not just Trichos). Haworthias make nice gifts this time of the year if you are poor like me. Indoor succulent, minimal care, doesn't rot easily, does good in low light.

Sprouts from all my Trcho seeds too, so it took one week! I planted them about for days after my last post. I'll post pics after they get a little bigger

Wow, lucky. I've tried 3 times and failed all three. You get good light by the window? I haven't seen direct sun in 3 weeks so I'm doing under LED.
What are you doing for soil conditions?

I followed this and so far so good. Over 80% of my peruvian torch seeds sprouted and none of my san pedro seeds sprouted which leads me to believe that they were dead seeds .... I have it on a table in a well lit area near an east facing window but doesn't get direct sunlight. Soil conditions, i didn't do anything until probably 3-4 days after sprouting, poked 2 holes and left for a few days, then misted with spring water and poked more holes. I tried not to get it too wet. Just learning as I go but so far it seems to be working.

Yeah, I'm afraid all my seeds are dead. Even other seeds than cactus were dead for me.

I just do an equal part mix of peat, creek sand, pumice, and potting soil for my mix, and it never fails me.

What is the fastest way to grow peruvian torch? I live in an area that is semi-arid (hot and very dry summers, cold and snowy winters) would it be best to grow the cacti outside during the summer time and inside under a grow light during winter? And if so, does the cacti need a dark period? Or can you just leave it under a grow light 24/7?

The absolute fastest? Buy a mature plant and grow that. :P
The second fastest would be listed above, graft onto Pereskiopsis and yes, grow outside while nights are above 60F for Pereskiopsis. Once the Trichocereus are on their own roots and big enough to plant in the ground, you can build a cold frame over them and they should be fine with protection into the high 20s. I have read mixed opinions on growing cactus 24/7. The first year, yes, seeds can grow 24/7; after that, the popular opinion is to let them go dormant.
I have not noticed any drawbacks of letting my plants grow as much as possible throughout the year. They slow down in winter but most of mine kept growing right through the winter solstice. I'm sure several other members live in region where dormancy simply doesn't occur. I say let it happen naturally if it gets cold enough, otherwise, let them keep growing. The growth will thin a little bit going into winter.
Winter is actually golden weather for growing succulents, not necessarily cactus.
I am in USDA zone 8B

Interesting. I've looked all over for an adult but haven't had any luck I don't think a good frame would work where I live. I live in a zone 2. While the average summer day is 90 degrees and sunny the winters are pretty brutal. It gets to -40 degrees in the winter. Thanks for the advice!

USDA zone 2? ouch, that changes everything. Yeah, a cold frame or even typical southern greenhouse will just get everything killed in zone 2.
I intend to get land in northern Idaho at some point and possibly even retire there, although that is USDA zone 4 - 5, winters would still be -20. Temps in the -40 sounds like North Dakota, Montana, or Canada. I recommend looking at tropical greenhouses in Idaho and along he US/Canada border. Insulation is of far greater importance in the north than is it in the south in regards to greenhouses.
If you have the space and really want to grow cactus in USDA zone 2a / 2b, your best options are as follows:
Grow inside and under lights, supplementing with whatever light you can get from windows. Your electricity bill will be extensive.
Or...
Construct a greenhouse with triple wall or greater poly carbonate; double pane glass works too but it's uber expensive. Optionally, have it recessed into the ground or use geothermal heating and cooling since the temperatures 5' under the soil surface are usually stable. You will need active heating, a main source (I recommend wood), and a backup source and I recommend propane for the backup since it never spoils and works in a grid-down. A multi-day freeze and no heat source can cause a lot of destruction.
There is a third option of using a smaller greenhouse while temperatures are above 35, then bring everything inside the house when the freezes start.

I'm same, winters are -30 to -40 at worst. I feel ya especially when you get to the point of having to move 30 or 40 pots inside on and off the deck lol

So OP did yours ever sprout?
Here are my seed grown Trichs. It took roughly three weeks for them to sprout and start growing.
These are all land race strains obtained from the wild, except for one cell, that has a mix of common cacti seeds that came form walmart. All the rest are Trichs.

Those look good! Yeah I got about 40 sprouts of peruvian torch. The san pedro seeds didn't sprout at all... Thinking about placing them under a grow light and see if they grow faster.
