Substrate question

I bought 20lbs of substrate from Highdesertspores about 4 months ago. I only used 5lbs. So I have 15lbs left. I don’t have freezer space so I have the substrate in the box it arrived in. Sitting in my closet. I have a 3lb bag that’s almost fully colonized. Is it safe to use this substrate?
Also I thought about doing the bucket tek with a brick of coir and vermiculite. The tek looks simple and easy. A friend told me I should probably not risk making my own substrate because I could waste my spawn I waited so long for to colonize. I need opinions. Is it easy to mess up substrate doing the bucket tek?
Thanks, Ex

Success rates with homemade products tend to be much higher than those with commercially bought products, as long as you follow the tek correctly

Thanks. I did have success with the vendors substrate. It was about 2 months old when I used it. I made 2 shoeboxes and yielded 2 oz dry. Here are some pics of that grow:

These were the variety Treasure coast. I was having problems with aborts. I would get a nice pinset but more then half would abort. I obviously didn’t have these dialed in correctly. I asked about it on here and also did some research. I believe I was misting and fanning more then needed.
I’m excited for this next grow because it’s the variety albino a+. My 3lb is about 90% colonized and I’m going to do 3 shoeboxes with that spawn. I really don’t want to fk up because of the substrate. I’ve been waiting a long time for this bag to colonize. (I had it in a cooler area which was taking a long time for colonizing) I then moved it to a shelf where the temperature is 73 degrees Fahrenheit. Since then it started colonizing a lot faster.
Does anyone think my substrate from Highdesertspores is still good to use?
Should I order new substrate or give it a go at the bucket tek?
All suggestions are much appreciated.
Thanks, Ex 🙏🏼

I can’t say whether old or new substrate from a vendor will work any given time, but I can say that countless people here use the bucket tek for every grow with success, and countless more post pictures of contaminated or failed grows from purchased products. Your old substrate might work fine, and newly purchased substrate might work fine, but if you do the bucket tek and do it correctly, it’s pretty much definitely going to work

Thanks 🙏🏼 I’m going with the bucket tek. I’ll follow the directions to the T. It’s also a lot cheaper. I already have a bag of vermiculite and 3 bricks of coir is about $8 at petco. Do you know about how many pounds of substrate a brick of coir makes?
