Happy Hanukkah 2020! 2

A happy holiday season to those of you of the Jewish faith!
something i have been curious about for a long time, i always see Hasidic men smoking cigarettes, i used to have Jewish friends who smoked herbs and whose parents smoked herbs, and clearly alcohol is part of festivities in the Jewish traditions
like any religion or culture, addictions are generally frowned upon, but i am under the impression that Judaism does not take a strict stand against intoxicants in the same way that the Amish or Muslims, say, have these 'bans' on substances
does anyone have any thoughts or insight on this?

There’s a holiday called Purim where we’re commanded to get drunk, but I find Judaism isn’t really like a punishment kind of religion. Like, my Rabbi used to smoke like everyone did in the 70s. She saw it as weakness and holding her back from her full potential.
Is it forbidden? No, but it is frowned upon, but at the same time, I guess the feeling is like “do your best”. You’re supposed to guard all life as precious, and smoking is dangerous to that health, but it’s on you to stop or not. I think some important Jewish thinker said something like “God bless the simpletons” in regard to smoking, meaning, it’s become so ingrained in our culture that you can’t really fault a person if they can’t stop.

'commanded' to get drunk, my kind of religion
i live in NYC and am constantly surprised and curious about Hasidism
at one point i was researching all the mitzvahs and what it means to be kosher, and it led me to a lengthy article about 'squeezing snails to extract their ink', for dyeing clothe presumably
just, wow
personally i would be a terrible Hasid, it seems like every hour of every day is totally smothered in rules

Except the ones designed to uphold the health of their community while they gather in the thousands to celebrate death and union.

I live in a neighborhood that’s half reformed orthodox and half chabad Hasidic. Not a lot of smokers but quite a few hotties on Grindr. You have to get into th really conservative Hasidic movements before Jews get super judgemental about sinning and faggotry.

I have a couple of Jewish family members now. I'm a bit fuzzy on the details of Hanukkah, like I don't think I have seen the first or last nights if anything special happens with those. Just what I think were nights in the middle, a brief song in Hebrew and lighting candles.
When I was a kid we knew these other weirdo Catholics and our families decided to celebrate Passover seders together. I found them to be more authentic of a religious experience than most church stuff. And I think they were a big part of the reason my older sister eventually converted to Judaism.

how does a Grindr meet-up go down between a Hasid and anyone else?
this is much more interesting than squeezing snails
most Hasids are not allowed to use technology, although Yankee did have one, and he was a dirty little gambler

Chabad isn’t as nutty as other sects. My neighbors are pretty normal. They dress like Amish people on the sabbath, and some of them wear those little strings around their waist. Nobody around here is technology deprived. I live inside an Eruv so some of the sabbath rules are relaxed. https://www.bethsholom.org/eruv.html
Here’s a daily show story about an Eruv
Grindr hookups are the same. Speaking of Grindr, I see the former rabbi of the local synagogue who got arrested after appearing on to catch a Predator online all the time.

haha, i did not know that was called an Eruv, i learned about them a few years back, that explains why i get away with mad stuff under them, sort of, i don't even have to wear tzitzit
that 2nd one looks like a completely staged version of stuff that definitely happens

In extreme Orthodox Judaism, yeah...smartphones are frowned upon because it distracts you from your connection to God and the earth. It would be hard to be, like, a Lubavitch gay man...that's for sure. I saw a video on YouTube where a chasid guy in NYC had a smartphone for business purposes, which is completely acceptable, but his 9 year old kid was against it.
There's a Chabad in Fort Lauderdale that actually welcomes gay people and lots of gay folks go there. It's a pretty liberal Chabad compared to ones in Boca Raton. Women are allowed to wear sleeveless tops and skirts that kiss the knee line. The Rabbi at that one told me he didn't care who people love as long as they live a good Jewish life. Every Chabad I've gone to in Palm Beach County seems to be full of Israelis and the atmosphere isn't very welcoming to any outsiders.

Yeah a lot of people around here speak Hebrew, which I assume means they are Israeli. American Jews do not speak Hebrew to each other. Maybe Yiddish.

I guess if a rabbi blessed it, it would be more "kosher". But I'm pretty sure kosher just applies to the way an animal is slaughtered for food.

I mean, again, it depends on how old the person is you're talking to. Older Jews still see it as an illegal drug, like most of our parents or grandparents. Younger Jews and Rabbis recognize its medicinal purposes.
Here's a really good article on smoking and Jews. Marijuana isn't not kosher.

Sort of....it's a diet/lifestyle if you're committed to it. Yeah, there's lots of kosher rules about the consumption of animals (no pig, smooth lungs, split hoof, salting, etc), but there's also kosher practices in the home. Like you can't mix milk and meat, but eggs are considered neutral. Veggies are veggies and you can probably put dairy in a veggie fridge, but you need to have a separate fridge for meat only. The ultra orthodox have three sets of dishes and silverware (meat, milk, passover).
Koshering a kitchen for Passover means you have to get rid of "chametz", or stuff that isn't kosher for passover like leavened bread or beans. You can give your "chametz" away, sell it, or throw it out.
I sorta lived it for a while myself and it was hard...not gonna lie. I'm glad for the experience, though...made me more grateful for meats. You know, like you can't help but think something had to die for me to live, so thanks chicken for giving me your boob for sustenance.

Not gonna lie...my health took a steep downward tumble around Halloween (no 'rona), but they think they finally figured out what's wrong with me, so I've been looking forward to getting on the path to total wellness in 2021. Got a colonoscopy scheduled for February so I've been making a mixtape. Hope Dr. Gonzalez likes Barry White and Luther Vandross.
What's a good wine to bring to a colonoscopy? Franzia? I mean, it's always a good time for Franzia...
How about you? How's 2020 treating you?
