Can you break and shake a spawn bag too many times?
    #27081479 - 12/10/20 02:20 AM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Not long ago, my span bag was almost fully colonized but started pinning early. I broke up the grain quite thoroughly and shook the bag and a majority of it looked brown and uncolonized. After 2-3 days, it began colonizing very quickly. It got thick again but there were still small patches that looked untouched. I broke it up and shook it again and it is possibly 90% cultivated now but seems like it may have hit another plateau again. If pinning begins before full colonization, should I just continue this process until it finally pins after the entire bag looks colonized? Could I speed this along by continuing to break up the mycelium or could I eventually harm the grow by doing that too many times? From what I understand, breaking shaking only once is ideal if possible but I am concerned about potential contamination if full colonization is not achieved before pinning/harvest and i am wondering which potential risk would outweigh the benefit.

Namaste

From what I understand, as long as your mycelium is healthy, it can be broken and shaken numerous times with no problem.

Given the fact that people can continuously G2G a single culture 6/7/8+ times (meaning at least one, if not two shakes every time), I don't think it's really a concern.

I haven't worked with spawn bags myself but if you broke and shook it twice already at 90% and still have uncolonized patches I'd be pretty suspicious. A shake at anywhere from 30-80% results in full colonization within days for me usually.

Could be hard to spot contam or improper prep or something else, maybe someone else will have a better answer but pictures would help.

in my opinion yes.... i always shake my bags one time but very intens... first breaking up the white spot thru the bag and grab the material while turning the bag.... 5 days after that if there is a big uncolonizated space i didt do it correctly.. sometimes after shaking 2nd time the growing stops...on this bags pressing out air tru the filter oftens smells sour...

That means your shit's contaminated, lol. The shaking didn't do that, it just made it more apparent as it's dispersed more.

And to the OP, it also sounds like it's contaminated with early pinning, uncolonized areas, etc. and pictures always help.
