Why are my mushrooms so small
    #27080661 - 12/09/20 03:07 PM (3 years, 2 months ago)

This is my first grow ever. I used the PF tec using brown rice flour and vermiculite. I got contamination in my jars during inoculation because I was not sanitary enough (lesson learned). I let them grow out (because this was my first time) and some jars were much better than others filled with white mycelium.

The contamination I had was green mold and after doing research I was under the impression that the mycelium could overcome the mold and some jars did. A month after inoculation pins were forming in my jars and I researched that this was due to the contamination. The next day I birthed the cakes and using a knife sterilized with alcohol and flamed I cut the remaining portions of green mold off of the cakes and swabbed the areas with 70% isopropyl alcohol.

I rehydrated the cakes for a full 24 hours using tap water. The next day I prepared my fruiting chamber with perlite which I rinsed multiple times with water from the tap. I placed the cakes I rehydrated on aluminum foil and misted & fanned the chamber. I have been misting and fanning 3 to 4 times a day. I fan for 2 minutes at a time.

The mushrooms have been growing bigger but today I noticed the veils have opened on some of the bigger ones and even some of the smaller ones. This being said they are all small. I will include pictures at the end. I read that I should harvest before the veil breaks for potency and just harvested the mushrooms with broken veils now.

My question is why are they so small, but the veils are breaking? I'm thinking is possibly the contamination, too much humidity, or too little humidity, or not enough fresh air exchange.

Lastly, I plan on eating these. Will they be more potent?

This picture is maybe 2 days after birthing.

*the vermiculite was sprinkled on rather than rolled because I didn't want to damage the pins.
I also used it to prop them up so they did fall over because I had to cut chunks out from the sides.

7 days after birthing.

The ones circled have opened their veils.

Looks like conditions. I see a lot of moisture on your foil. Are you over misting? Lift a cake and see if there is water pooling underneath.

And as to your question "will they be more potent", no one can say as potency varies when growing from an MS syringe. I think you might be thinking about "aborts" which are generally more potent because it seems they have more actives in less material. Those are not aborts, just small fruits.

Yes, there was water under the cakes. I just removed the vermiculite on the aluminum foil as well.

I only fan when I mist, should I fan more often than that? Will fanning help remove excessive moisture?

Edit: I think the second picture may have been taken right after misting, (the foil may be wetter than usual) regardless I think you're right.

If u want nice big frutis ditch PF tek and go bulk. More water = more better mush me thinks

Yes, I was going to make a mini mono next, about 20 quarts. I have cattle manure and peat moss for bulk substrate and I was going to use birdseed to spawn on.

i have had instances where my first flush is full of puny, small fruit and then the 2nd flush is a couple monsters. likely conditions are the culprit but also could be genetics

congrats on your grow :toast: :mushroom2:

If you trim the foil to more closely match the cake size, it will increase the FAE they are receiving and help evaporate moisture from them.  Right now the large pieces of foil are blocking airflow from the perlite bed at the edges of the cake.

in some of those pics they look overwatered...go easier on the mistings and try to mist above the cakes and let it fall on them vs. directly misting.  They need to be able to dry out somewhat (watch the color of the verm on top) before being misted again or they will rot.  The verm layer is delicate and easy to wash off before the mycelium grabs ahold of it, so it takes some extra effort to avoid washing it off the cakes right after they are birthed.
