It seemed to colonize quickly. This picture is from 7 days. But I don't see pins. And in the past I had similar looing substrate that never progressed further. Does this look ok?

Have a look here, imo it looks like overlay or mold

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say the colony is up against some mold, it def looks stressed af.

I have never heard of overlay. So I did some searching here and it seems that this happens very rarely with cubes. And I have it happening now on 2 tubs. So perhaps it is something else? Is there anything I can do to salvage this?

Cubes don't overlay man. What some may mistake for overlay is usually the product of contamination and/or environmental factors.

In all honesty I think it looks too bad to get something from it. If it was my grow I'd just toss it and try again.

I ran into this problem a while back. All of a sudden 3 tubs trich'ed out immediately once fully colonized. I had no real issues.. You could say the spawn was a tad sluggish but its was colonizing quarts of rye fine enough. I ended up restarting on agar. But now I'm curious again after reading this.. Seems very similar.

Some have pointed out here that it may be overlay. Today I noticed that it started pinning. Would that mean it is not overlay or can overlay pin?
