Dacrymyces Chryospermus / Palmatus - Witch's Butter / Orange Jelly

So I found some Witch's Butter growing on firewood in my yard.

A brief search of here and reddit comes up blank. I don't think anyone has cultivated it , and if they've tried, they haven't said much about it.
This isn't usually considered* a very valuable mushroom. It has almost no flavor, the fruits are small, the texture isn't really pleasing. I tasted it and it tastes like water with a very slight hint of mushroom flavor. Imagine if someone took one of those unsweetened water drinks that have the hint of fruit flavoring but made it mushroom flavor instead of a fruit. The consistency is that of extra hard gelatin.
*This mushroom can be found growing wild in any season, even on frozen wood in the dead of winter, and is edible raw in survival situations. For this reason, I posit that under the right circumstances, this could be the most valuable mushroom a person ever laid eyes on.
Now, this is already "cultivated" using the woodpile tek, but since that's basically cheating, of course I took a sample, rinsed it three times in filtered water, and put it onto agar in the SAB.
This species grows on softwoods, so I'm gonna need to get my hands on some softwood sawdust. I could just take my chainsaw to the log it's growing on and load the chips into a quart jar, but that feels like double cheating.
If this culture takes off, I will transfer to oats and make grain spawn, then try to cultivate it on some softwood sawdust if I can find any.

You can try to use finely chopped straw, it's not wood but it's soft. The main problem about small mushrooms is the very long time you need to pick them.

Update:
Took a transfer from the agar plate to a new plate.
It grew out successfully, and "pinned" prolifically on agar.
The way it fruits is very interesting. It produces a yellow exudate that turns into a gel, which eventually becomes the fruit.
As the mycelium ages it turns from white to the yellow gel. I don't think there's going to be any trouble fruiting it.
I transferred a wedge from the t1 plate to a quart of oats. Colonization was fast as was conversion to the yellow gel.

I have transferred approx 4oz spawn to a 3lb fruiting block of 75% hardwood, 25% oat flour. I had forgotten until coming back to this thread that this species is supposed to love softwood, so who knows what is gonna happen next.

Update:
It's colonizing pretty well on the supplemented hardwood. Hopefully it's eating the wood and not just the flour.

It was sure pretty quick both to colonize a good portion of this bag as well as convert its mycelium to these tiny fruits.
It's possible for fruits to get to 3", maybe more. If it ends up fruiting hundreds of tiny fruits, I will try running it on unsupplemented sawdust, similar to Turkey Tail.

I just agared a witch's butter and willow brain. I think they're cool. Gonna grow some when the agar is isolated a few times. Super contams from wild clone lol. Harvest enough wild to eat a spoonful. They tasted like flavorless jello with a hint of wood.

Update:
The bag has just a tiny bit left on the top to colonize. It will probably be ready for the FC tomorrow.

I am thinking I will do a very small slit at first to see how it reacts.

Hell yeah, great pic looks like a nice size for WB and not dried out!
I am hoping to get some fruits at least a couple inches across. I don't want 1cm fruits!

maybe someday..its nice to know it is able to be grown..and its interesting to see your progress and process.. but right now I've got a few projects going... probably way too much for me to do justice with my little experience.. I haven 4 different oysters going and beech and hen of the woods on agar and black peril and lions mane on grain. 5 bags of fruiting blocks of Shitaka which I have no idea how to make fruit successfully but I'm gonna give it a shot...as they were given to me ready to go.. I also have two more LC chestnut and another Oyster var..I'm really excited as I just did my first black peril bag on hardwood sawdust and millet sup..and its growing amazing its such a aggressive myc.. lions mane is so fine myc almost didn't see it growing in the jars.. so any case my plate is full...but I do enjoy seeing wild mushrooms growing

Update:
The bag is fully colonized.
These small white formations with orange centers are probably the true pins:

I cut very, very tiny slits at a few of the pins, and moved the bag into the GH which is 73-75°F and 90-96% RH

I found more today on a different bull pine...log a lot smaller fruit..but bright orange...seems to love the bulpine tree...I'd make a bullpine sawdust block if I was gonna grow it out.. progress looks good...I'm glad you are doing this project fun to learn about different wild mushrooms..

Update:
The in vitro fruits/pins are looking plentiful and colorful.

The spots with the slits in the bag just sorta dried and did not fruit outwardly.
Since this is a winter mushroom, I have decided to move it into the basement at 55-60F in a mono. Hopefully this cooler temp encourages it to fruit.
I am running Turkey Tail and Hen of the woods in the same fruiting chamber, as these didn't like the warmer FC either, and I know Maitake requires 50-60.

How long ago did you inoculate the maitake? im trying to understand how long the incubation period is for this species. ive had some incubating since the beginning of the year but they dont really show any sign of fruiting yet. Mycelia gives a ripening phase of 25-35 days.. what does that mean?
