hi ppl! this year ive been using the google lens app to identify mushrooms i dont know on the field and the thing is that it truely works, just snap a pic or load some and bam, lots of similar pictures, links to the wikipedia, really nice tool if u mix it with a little bit of common sense. Just wanted to tell u to give it a try if u are not too worried about your privacy

The problem with neural-net systems like Lens is the sample set which it is trained upon. For rare mushrooms, there may be little to no accurate metadata attached to any uploaded photos, so you're more likely to get a false identification. I wouldn't rely on it to make a judgement of edibility or activity.

Given the kind of data necessary to properly identify mushrooms, such as texture, smell and minute details
like frayed or specifically colored gill edges, velar remnants and so on, I deem so-called AI identification applications
to be shortcoming at best. You'll need to learn all the basics of identification yourself in any case.

In my own experience, the better ones I've tried usually give a list of several possible contenders when you post
a reasonably good picture, and in the cases where one of the suggestions match, they are rarely ranked as first
alternative. This usually goes for even the more common species or genera.

i agree that it would happen, its not like it would be the definitive ID machine but its helpful bc even in false id's it leads you to the wikipedia link where 's the info about spore color, other pics and that stuff that may help u to discard a candidate. for very rare species probably u are not able to know nothing in the field anyways, dont know a lot about paper field guides, but probably wont be much better and will have much more info and pics than mr google
