Check out the Foxfire books series. It's about how people in my neck of the woods were raised and learned how to do things.

yes definitely, I find with his books the beginning can be a little slow but then it builds up for a great ending. they're definitely long books though. by the time you get to part 5 of the book you probably will have a hard time putting it down, and then the subsequent books are great too. it just takes a while to build up the characters and story

Lately I've been rereading books I enjoyed when I was younger. Things that felt important at the time. Looking back on it now, I can see why certain books grabbed me, even if I didn't understand why at the time. I thought the wandering Buddhist aspect of Kerouac was what I was so interested in when I was younger, but reading it now I see that it was the simple language, and the tenderness of it. He was a delicate soul in a rough world.
I never cared for much of the other beat generation authors for that same reason. They were full of shit. Full of themselves. Leaching off the authentic. That's my feeling anyway.
Anyway, it's nice to go back over books I haven't touched in 20 years. I'm rereading the illuminatus right now. It's not nearly as interesting as I remember.

Barnaby said: 1984 left me confused and the movie as well. Read it definitely but give your insight on it if you want to post it. I get the thought police. Take psychedelics and one gets it quite fast.
But the main protagonist I just don't get that fictional characters logic and reason. Still bugs me that I never got it and I could read it again but life seems to be moving at a really rapid pace and am just trying to keep up with it in ways that matter and not get lost in the trivial and fakeness of it all.
Spent enough time in that but it is a constant process.
So not sure what to read next. Kindle unlimited selections suck. Bought 1984 a ways back on paperback.
Is strange with a book I like that it is hard to start but if it is good then after awhile it just flows and I look forward to reading it for a couple of hours a day. I always remember a teacher I had in school saying give a book 50 pages and if you like it keep reading and if not, let it go.
I rarely get good advice and when I do follow it but that one stuck with me.
If you want to read something confronting the same issues that's a little more grounded in real experience, check out The Gulag Archipelago.
Solzhenitsyn essentially sat in a soviet forced labor camp and thought about how things got the way they were, and wrote about it in three volumes, with brutal honesty.

After 400 pages it's fucking labour man. Are you studying ethics or reading books? if it hasn't hooked you there's probably a reason.
