Food grade vs industrial
    #27077493 - 12/07/20 05:58 PM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Hey guys, just wondering what your thoughts are on food grade ingredients in the substrate or casing? I'm specifically looking at gypsum and limestone powder. I can find "industrial" non food safe versions of both of these for cheaper, but is it safe to be feeding the mushrooms this stuff and then eating them long term? Should I shell out the big bucks for the clean stuff?

Just use coir. You don't need either of those additives.

I could do that, the peat was really cheap though. I also heard the mycelium can start to use the coir as a substrate, but I'm using as a casing layer

you got that backswards coir is a substrate not a actual straight up casing.

That's what I mean, I'm looking to use peat for a casing not coir

:stoned:

oh. shit you dont really even need a casing for cubes but peat is ideal. you dont want the casing to colonize.

I know it's not essential but I'd like to use a casing and peat was so cheap. Just stuck on how to safely/cheaply get the pH up

Why are you worried about ph levels?

I read all the threats about peat moss acidity and raising the pH with limestone, calcium carbonate, etc
