Hello dear friends,
I would like to start new journey - to grow Lions Mane.
I have couple of questions though, as I am unable to find answers to following questions, or any end-2-end tek for Lions Mane.
I have spore syringe with Lions Mane, I would like to use my monotube to grow it at home.
Can you please advise me on the following: 1. What sort of grain spawn mix should I use for inoculation? 2. What temperature should I keep inoculated Grain spawn to colonize best? 3. Once bags are fully colonized, and then mixed with substrate, what temperature should I keep the cake to fruit? 4. Is there a TEK taking noobs like me by the hand from preparing spawn, colonization, describing best conditions for each stage, what substrate to prepare and how, fruiting conditions and cultivation advise?
Thank you in advance for all your help

1st off you should not grow LM in a monotub.
1. What sort of grain spawn mix should I use for inoculation?
Answer: Whole oats are good. I use 50/50 whole oats and millet.
What temperature should I keep inoculated Grain spawn to colonize best?
Answer: 72F
Once bags are fully colonized, and then mixed with substrate, what temperature should I keep the cake to fruit?
Answer:
60F - 70F
Is there a TEK taking noobs like me by the hand from preparing spawn, colonization, describing best conditions for each stage, what substrate to prepare and how, fruiting conditions and cultivation advise?
Answer: I don't know of a tek. Just ask your questions on the shroomery like you just did.

I have related questions, hope it's ok to ask them here. I have a few bags that are almost full colonized. I used millet and it was in about 80F.
But I don't know how to go from here. What substrate? And most of all I can't get to 60 - 70F; more like 74/75. What do I do?

For sub use 50/50 soy hulls/Hardwood fuel pellets and if you can only get it down to 75F just grow them there you will still get fruit. Those numbers are for optimal temps.

I have fuel pellets. Needs to be mixed with soy hulls? Is this ok for soy hulls? https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mushroom-Media-Online-100-Soy-Hull-Mushroom-Pellets-Growth-Substrate-10lbs/178714051
Mix 50/50 by weight?
How much spawn to the substrate?
Currently I used 66qt tubs. Can this LM be put in the same tub?

First off you don't want to grow lions mane in a tub. They will not get enough FAE. You may get away with it but the results will be poor. Another key thing that most new growers make the mistake of doing is misting lions mane if lions mane gets wet they will turn brown.
Yes, 50/50 by weight.
Those soy hulls will work but that price is outrageous. Look at or call a feed store near you. I get 50 lbs of soy hulls for $5 at southern states feed store you may have one near you.

How much spawn to substrate?
Then I put the mixture in a grow bag and seal it?
Puncture some holes in it?
You mention they need FAE. How will they get FAE in the bag?
I googledand found a feed store not too far from me. I will call them tomorrow. Just to make sure are all soy hulls the same for this?
Thank you so much for all your help.

2 cups (16 oz) is more than enough spawn for a 5 lb bag. I personally use 8 oz. But that is not by weight. I use a spoodle. So just eyeball about 2 cups.
Put the spawn in a filter patch bag with properly hydrated hardwood fuel pellets and seal it with a cable tie above the filter patch. The sub in the bags needs to be sterilized and cooled to room temp before you put the spawn in.
Once the bags are colonized you zip tie the bag below the patch tight against the sub so it will not get air from the filter patch anymore then slice a few x's in the bag. Pins will start to form at the x's because of the fresh air. Now the pins are outside the bag and your fruits will grow properly with all the fresh air you decide to give them.
I use these for zip ties so I don't have to cut them off. They can even be put in the PC without a problem...

Not all soy hulls are the same they come in pellets and loose like flour. I use the pellets. Just tell them you need cattle feed.

This recipe will get you close but be careful with the water. It is better to test your sub moister with the tek in my sig...

There are no cattle farms where I live. I checked the few farm feed stores not too far from here and they didn't have it. Online is difficult to find that are not outrageously expensive cause of the shipping. Is an alternative to soy hulls?

I don't have cattle near me either but after I searched a very long time I was able to find them they are not easy to find but worth it. If you can not find soy hulls then I would use wheat bran. It is not as good but it works...

Again be careful with the water and the chicken poo and gypsum is optional but does seem to help. I use Espoma chicken manure...

ya soy hulls or rice hulls arent around here either, bran isnt in grocery stores anymore either.. I suspect fine chopped straw may work just as well or even coir and verm. from my understanding the idea of hulls is to add more air and easily digested cellulose so while soy is optimum it will grow on pure SOLID wood just slower and less yeild. even a mix of pellets and aspen shavings should work pretty well but prob take week or 2 more(guess)
Thats one issue with so many TEKS, they dont say WHY. while tried and true is great, not always doable in parts of the world.. ie 20 years ago folks in asia or near equator ordering peat from the north meanwhile had a better resource available. or ordering expensive rye berries when oats is cheaper and more available in alot of places...if folks had been told what and why.. anyhoo i digress
cheers!

Not sure what you mean by bag weight. I have these bags. Are they good for this? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PZ27PN9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1
I will do some more looking tomorrow for soy hulls.

I would save those for spawn they are 0.2 micron. 0.5 micron is all you need for substrate bags. I have never tried to grow in a 0.2 micron bag but I am sure they will be ok.
What I mean by weight of bag is after you put the water and all the ingredients in the bag that will be the weight of the bag. I wouldn't worry too much about that.
Here is where I get my bags if you are in the USA...
https://myersmushrooms.com/shop/ols/products/200-mushroom-grow-bags-5-7-lb-14a
$4 more and you could have doubled the amount of bags and got 50 pcs.

You can use either of them for sub they are just more expensive than 0.5 microns. I have used the 0.5 for spawn bags without a problem so 0.2 micron is just overkill for sub bags in my opinion. Next time just save yourself the money and buy the 0.5 microns.

How about getting good bags in UK? Can you recommend please?
Ok, so lets say we have colonized bags etc. They are ready to fruit - where is the best to fruit them? Should I buy growing tent? What humidity does Lions mane like?

You need more than a grow tent you need an exhaust fan a circulation fan and some way of putting humidity into the tent. Then you need a few cycle timers. A humidity controller is nice also but you can just use another cycle timer but it is harder. Bilge fans are water-resistant so if you can find them in the UK they are cheaper than other fans that are water-resistant.
LM likes 60F to 70F temp and 85% to 95% humidity when fruiting.
