Is this pecan log already contaminated?
    #27077028 - 12/07/20 11:56 AM (3 years, 1 month ago)

I was given a "freshly-cut" pecan log by my tree guy. I intend to use this log for an outdoor Lion's Mane grow, and it is too big to fit in my pressure cooker. I was getting ready to inoculate it with a Lion's Mane wood dowel kit, but then I noticed this ring of white all the way around the circumference.

What do you guys think? Is this log already contaminated with mycelium? Should I find another log to inoculate, or do you think this one is probably okay? Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hi sp4, if your Hericium culture is aggressive enough, it could out-compete the contaminant (in some cases even "co-fruiting", which I have found with Stereum sp. and Pleurotus ostreatus). However, depending on the fungus or fungi already present in your "freshly-cut" pecan wood and the level of colonization, you might get nothing. It would be best to harvest and inoculate (without pressure-cooking)a fresh log in the spring time and not use the log you have. Good luck,
R_D

So the pecan log really looks contaminated with another fungus, huh?
Guess I'll save it for firewood and inoculate an oak log instead.

Thanks for confirming, R_D.

Hi Sp4, it's hard to tell, that could just be surface contamination, but I would guess that you already have a fungus (or ++) colonizing that log. If you have the plugs and can make more no problem, you could always give it a shot but I wouldn't expect much. Would it be easy for you to get more logs in the spring? You would have a better chance with a fresh log harvested in the spring (before leaf-out). R_D
