do you think the Beatles are incredibly psychedelic?

cause I do lol. I always talk to people about what they think of the Beatles and I feel like I meet surprisingly few psychedelics users that dig them nearly as much as me. I think they were probably some of the most far out people of the 1960s when you compare their acid soaked work to their contemporaries, and you don't have to look far at all into their interviews, performances, lyrics, etc. to see that John and George at least were incredibly incredibly far out. John even described the two as 'way more cracked' from acid than the others, and Paul McCartney had a profound DMT experience.
Obviously most of you probably know this but if you view them as an old timey lame outdated group (like some of my friends still do lol) then I highly recommend listening to Magical Mystery Tour and Sgt. Pepper's. I only post because I believe so strongly in how well they describe and 'simulate' the acid experience even compared to modern music.

Yes, especially The White Album.

the Beatles are great, you could make a case they're 'overrated' but only because they were so insanely successful. Definitely my favorite band from the 60s, and they definitely have psychedelic influences on clear display.
Comparing them to Pink Floyd seems unfair, the two are pretty different (and personally I think early floyd is overrated, Piper just doesn't do it for me, although I could say the same about early beatles)
Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Peppers, Magical Mystery Tour, Abbey Rd, White Album and Let it Be are all great.

I love Pink Floyd,
There’s definitely room for both. Pink Floyd is totally different, you listen to the whole album and it’s amazing, it’s like a movie.
The Beatles wrote great pop songs. You listen to the white album and you have to skip obladi oblada and a bunch of other hokey shit to get to sexy Sadie, happiness is a warm gun, etc. some of the best songs ever known. So idk I skip a lot of Beatles songs. But the ones I like, I love, they can bring tears of joy
Not to mention The Who, The Rolling Stones, the kinks, to name a few, there was great music coming out of England

I'm hard pressed to chose, very different vibes, personally Floyd is closer to my actual experience of psychedelics with the steady influx of dark imagery, so I would call them more 'psychedelic' at least

There’s nothing wrong with that, I won’t hold it against you. The Beatles had something for everyone. That one’s not for me, it may be even worse than yellow submarine. How about octopus’s garden, or Maxwell’s silver hammer? 😂

Yeah I don’t care about anything they did after the early 70s. They’re probably my least favorite of the British Invasion bands but I still love them. The Who, the kinks, and the Beatles are the best. The Who and the kinks are really predecessors to punk rock and even grunge in the case of The Who. All of these bands are great.
Pink Floyd came later with a dark psychedelic thing that was amazing and different from these other bands.

Totally agree with thr original post. The Beatles are most certainly psychedelic but in their own special way..
Seargent Pepper, Revolver, Magical Myatery Tour, The White Album. All very psychedelic albums
So good their weird stuff is their best stuff.

Alot of people forget about some the more obscure Beatles tracks and the early early "dark" years playing clubs in Munich on speed tablets and all sorts of german pharmaceuticals and animal tranquilizers.

The Beatles helped popularize and cement the psychedelic movement in popular culture with the 1965 album rubbersoul. It set a stylized tone. Norwegian wood with its use of sitar and introspective lyrics inspired by Bob Dylan who sold them the pot and acid has long been heralded as a ground breaking moment in music by musical and cultural historians the world over and perfectly encompasses the fusion of so many things that created the psychedelic movement. along with very early songs with double entandre like ticket to ride and day tripper which have a classic psychedelic rock sound again inspired by Dylan Mr tamporine man or songs like dear Mr fantasy. The Beatles ARE psychedelic rock theres no question. Remember floyd didn't come out with thier first album till 67 when the Beatles were doing stadium tours and Sargeant pepper.

The other classic rock bands mentioned (Pink Floyd, Stones, Who, Kinks, etc.) are all very psychedelic at times too, but I really don't think they come close to where the Beatles were at in 1966-1968. Pink Floyd, true or not, claims that they only really used psychedelics once or twice and that Syd Barrett was the real fan of them in the band, and even if they're just trying to save face and really did use them a lot I think it's really cool how honest the Beatles were about how much they believed in LSD.
I really don't think there are any bands with a more psychedelic sound in that time period, and even countless bands after have been super strongly influenced by the psychedelic side of the Beatles, not just their pop sensibilities. Particularly interesting was seeing that Boards of Canada were big fans of the Beatles, saying 'they really became enthralling to use through their psychedelia'.
here's a little BoC if you haven't heard of them:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejio5NMlxjE&list=PL186mAqNp-o1HwNuvpGkuzaIt6f9IQ7CJ&index=18
EDIT: also here is a clip that I believe is of John Lennon trippin balls at the Rock N Roll Circus in 1968 lol

Pink Floyd is by far one of the pioneers of the genra. Their later albums lose a lot of the psychedelic appeal but the albums saucer full of secrets up to dark side of the moon are pure psychedelia.
IMO the Beatles don’t hold a candle to where Pink Floyd took it.

The Beatles made some fantastic psychedelic music
I am convinced the best psychedelic music from the 1960s and 70s came from the Velvet Underground but the Beatles are really fucking close in my book.

Don't get me wrong, Pink Floyd have some incredibly good and lyrically profound stuff after Syd Barrett. And of course Atom Heart Mother and Ummagumma are more in the 'freak out' vein than a lot of stuff so that's a psychedelic side to them they have going. And I really honestly believe that Piper at the Gates of Dawn is right up there with the Beatles most trippy stuff.
But I think the difference here is that Pink Floyd makes music that sounds really good when you're tripping, whereas Beatles make music about tripping that sounds really good when you're tripping. Pink Floyd were some amazing amazing musicians and songwriters and lyricists but the Beatles are just more random/fried sounding to me, which is in my mind a little closer to super strong psychedelic experiences. In my mind it's like comparing a beautifully arranged classical composition that isn't about tripping but pairs really well with a super glitchy IDM track- they are both enjoyable while under the influence, and maybe the classical music is even better because it is more thought out and well made, but the IDM stuff still blows my mind because of how close they get to the chaotic side of the psychedelic experience translated straight into sounds.
bottom line to me is I see Piper at the Gates as Pink Floyd's most psychedelic sounding album no question, and that took quite a bit from the Beatles. And that Atom Heart/Ummagumma stuff was well after the Beatles did that freaky stuff

Piper at the Gates of Dawn is my least favorite album of Pink Floyd. Trippyness-wise, i feel that Saucerful of Secrets leaves it in the dust.
The Beatles made music that was influenced by psychedelic drugs, but Pink Floyd made music that was psychedelic with probably little to no psychedelic drug influence. And in my opinion, they did it better without sid barret than with him.

Another vote for Rolling Stones here. A lot of Beatles and Pink Floyd stuff sounds gimmicky/outdated to my ears, like they got too caught up in trying to sound whoa trippy. Rolling Stones holds up as best rocknroll out there.

Ok so here the thing theres a big difference between "psychedelic rock" and the psychedelic sound. Pink Floyd's only real psychedelic rock album is piper with saucers of secrets being way more out there and in my mind have venture into the progressive rock realm while still maintaining the psychedelic sound.

True.
Their Satanic Majesties Request is a psychedelic mess with some good gems dispersed.
Can you expound more on the gimmicky/outdated thing?

Again the stones piggy backed the Beatles. These bands were on cocaine and heroin. Someone mentioned velvet underground thats a bag band

VU is a heroin band for sure but playing through white light white heat or VU & Nico in entirely is about as chaotic and beautiful and psychedelic as it gets

If your gonna go that far i would argue bands like early black sabbath were a far more psychedelic 60s English rock band.

Its hard to pin down what a psychedelic sound or band really is. but to me what sounds best when tripping lsd is rocknroll and Rolling Stones are peak rocknroll

I disagree but that's cool you think that...! I dunno what you mean by going that far ? Lol I just believe VU albums encompass the psychedelic experience way better than other rock n roll bands of the late 60s. Noise, chaos, beauty, peace, nihilism, jibberjabber and nonsense.. not just trippy sounds maaan, if you know what I'm sayin

I didn't mean going that far like its a stretch. I just meant if were talking about going farther than psychedelic rock. Obviously alot of velvet underground sounds good on psychedelics but almost all of it even the more raw sounds all of a sudden make alot of sense and sound amazing on heroin which is what it was meant for

I think I have to agree with this one because early metal was hella psychedelic.
Though I’m going to throw Hawkwind out there. Another early psychedelic smorgasbord of a band with very little commercial success.

I did this to myself in my formative years, got a bit sick of them. I respect the music but I don't seek it out to listen to.
My father and I spent about 20 years traveling together. In the 90's and early 00's he went through a major Phish phase. So it got played a bunch in the car. Phish was sort of whatever to me. Then later on in college a bunch my friends got into Phish. Then I was like, fuck Phish, I already listened to this shit for a decade.
I'm not a huge Beatles fan, but the White Album is my favorite. Though I like Revolver too. My Dad loves the Beatles, but he didn't over play it, and certainly nobody in college wanted to go see them since they are mostly dead.
I'm a much bigger fan of The Police.

Phish is great, probably legendary, in many ways. When you grow up listening to them and don't think too much about it, then all of a sudden it's the cool thing to be into, well it rubbed me the wrong way. Also, the crowds at Phish shows tend to piss me off. I'm a pretty easy going dude who has been to quite a large number of concerts and music festivals, obviously I have done some drugs in my years, but for whatever reason Phish shows just don't do it for me. I had a girlfriend for a while that was a huge Phish fan, she was also a trust fund kid, and was totally in her own world. Between that and growing up with Phish I suppose that's why I could care less about the band.

Going to concerts, or rather not going to them, is probably the biggest hit (emotionally) I personally have experienced over all this shit. My favorite venue closed, my favorite bar that also hosted a lot of music closed because the owner (a friend of mine) offed himself, the hits just keep coming.
I'd love to go to a live show. My wife said to me the other day, "I'd kill to go to a Lotus show right now." Lotus is one of my favorite bands, she kind of tolerates them, but that puts it into perspective. For years my wife and I would go to 10 or 15 shows a year, I'd hit up a four day festival or two. It was just an outlet and a way to escape. We saw Start Making Sense, a Talking Heads cover band last New Years. That's the last live concert I was at. It could be a year until we see that type of thing again. FFFF
